1 I JACK PARNELL~ DIRECTOR CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE THE HONORABLE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF MENDOCINO COUNTY In accordance with Section 2279 of the California Food and Agriculture Code, I am pleased to submit the Mendocino County Agricultural Crop Report for The total gross agricultural value for commodities produced in 1987 was $168,108,500. This is an increase of $11,403,100 from the 1986 crop production due almost entirely to an increase of $11,696,000 in forest products. Forest products was the leading category with a value of $116,907,000. Agricultural production value excluding timber was $51,201,500 a slight decrease of $292,900 from the 1986 value. Grapes were the second leading agricultural crop with a value of $18,401,000. The average price of $469 per ton received by the grower is also the second highest ever received. Production was off substantially 20-30% over 1986 due to the lack of winter rain and heat wave during bloom. The ha~vest was again very quick and early as in the previous three years. Grape acreage continues to increase in Mendocino County. Pear production was phenomenal in An all time record tonnage was recorded of 57,822 tons. This is all the more remarkable with respect to the fact that acreage continues to decline and the growers set another record of 21.9 tons per acre production. Unfortunately, the price received by the growers was disastrous as there was a price collapse on fresh pears during the harvest due to the competition from the Pacific Northwest. Livestock producers had some problems with drought conditions. The effects were scattered with range feed losses averaging 15 to 20 % with some areas sustaining losses as high as 50%. I must emphasize that this crop report represents only the ~s~ values to the Qrowers and does not reflect any net incomes nor costs of production. I wish to express my appreciation to the many people in the agricultural and timber industries, my able staff members, and the U.C.
