shrimp production in india: growth, profitability & controls Ramesh Gangatharan. Ph.D Wenger Manufacturing Inc. & Vice President, Society of Aquaculture Professionals (SAP) Mob:

Expected to reach MMT in

Global Shrimp Production Trends Vannamei accounts for over 75% of Global shrimp production & about 70% of Asian shrimp production Expected to reach 4.5MMT in from the current levels of about 3.75MMT Growth Areas: Americas Lead by Ecuador Asia Lead by India China production is flat

Indian Shrimp Production

Major Shrimp Farming States of India 63% Gujarat 7% 11% 9.5% 5.7%

Growth -Hatchery 1) Commercial introduction of Vannamei ) Brood stock is SPF from US breeding programs 3) Import of broodstock and hatchery was highly regulated 4) Quarantine facility by the Govt. AQF (Aquatic Quarantine Facility) 5) Hatcheries had to obtain license from the Govt. regulator (CAA) before they can start operations. 6) Spurt in the number of new hatcheries to over 500 nos to cater to the PL needs of the industry. 7) Hatchery Installed Capacity >100 Billion PL /Yr 8) PL Produced > 50 Billion 9) Broodstock multiplication center in the Pipeline

Growth - Feedmill 1) Massive expansion in the setting up of new feedmills starting in 2013 existing players as well as new players 2) Many shrimp processors set-up their own feedmill integration 3) More 20 large feedmills in operation with another 3 in the pipeline. 4) Installed capacity of over 2.5MMT/yr 5) Record year in Actual production of about 1.2MMT/yr 6) Avanti & CP Group emerge as the largest feed producers each producing over 300,000 MT/yr - 50% of Indian feed production

Growth - Farm 1) Semi Intensive farming 25-40/ m2 Intensive 50-70/m2 2) Harvest size 18-20gms in DOC production cost $4.5/Kg 3) 2017 Good Year, Stable Prices, expansion in farming 4) Introduction of Nursery stage in farming 2016 biosecurity and reduced growing period 5) Sludge removal shrimp toilet 6) 95% prod is vannamei drop in prices small % of farmers move to Monodon farming large size for niche Japanese markets 7) Small size (5-10gm) less expensive shrimp being sold in local market 8) Production in 2018 : 600, ,000 MT growing because of incresing area under production

Growth - Processing 1) More than 300 Processing plants with EU approval 2) Expansion in shrimp processing capacity of existing players 3) Many new players enter the field 4) Exported to China and Vietnam for re-processing 5) Top shrimp supplier to the US market in 2017

Challenges & Control to the Industry 1) White Spot Disease rampant in 2018, in-spite of using 100% SPF broodstock 2) White Faeces Disease, Running mortalities, Slow growth, EHP determine the harvest size of shrimp 3) Bio-security? 4) Nursery System a new concept 5) Increasing ingredient cost for feedmill 6) High FCR high organic and bacterial loads 7) Sludge removal 8) Increasing Production cost - falling farm gate price 9) Antibiotic related international trade issues more awareness now antibiotics - 100% done away 10) CERTIFICATION & TRACEABILITY will be the key in 2019

To continue to stay on the Growth Trajectory Responsible shrimp farming for sustainability Seawater / Brackishwater move away from fresh water sources Best Quality Broodstock and PL (Genetics) SPR Strains Black Tiger / Vannamei Ingredient Flexibility in feed formulation - reduced usage of Fish oil & Fish meal use more sustainable sources like Soy, Corn, DDGS with supplements

To continue to stay on the Growth Trajectory High Quality Feeds: Nutritional as well as Physical characteristics Extruded Feeds will take over in the coming years Extruded Functional Feeds to mitigate EHP and improve growth & survival rates Improved Farming Systems Automatic feeders, Antibiotic free farming (hatchery as well as farm) Environmental responsibility Co-ordination among all the stakeholders in the industry

Will the Black be Back?
