1 en m e c n ha n E d o o h Livei m a r g t P ro Introduction Liveihood Enhancement Program was initiated in 1998 focusing on the deveopment of communities through income generation opportunities, skis enhancement and overa improvement in iveihood of underprivieged. This program has quite extensive activities divided in two components i.e. on-farm and off-farm. Liveihood Enhancement (On Farm) On farm iveihood component promotes natura resource management, work for food security and income generation for the underprivieged communities. On farm activities enhance the iveihood of peope through agricutura interventions, provision of ivestock, poutry & fish farming, transfer of assets, promotion of horticuture and socia forestry. The program aso provides capacity buiding trainings to the beneficiaries. Best Practice Service Modes Mode-1 Sma Agri-farms The sma agri farm mode is designed for income generation and promotion of Non Geneticay Modified (NGM) seeds/fruits. Sma agricuture farms are deveoped for promotion of NGM seeds, fruits, vegetabes and other cash crops for income generation. These farms are deveoped through farmer groups with the technica support of concerned government departments. A crops are cutivated as per defined agricuture standards. Farmers' capacity is buit through fied activities and trainings for better and management, increased agricutura output and marketing. Capita cost is provided by HANDS for cutivation and profit is distributed among the farmer groups on equa sharing. The objectives of this mode are to: Organize farmers' groups. Promote NGM seeds. Buid capacity of sma farmers.

Agri-Input Mode-2 In this mode the individua farmers are supported through provision of agri-inputs for cutivation according to the needs of the farmer. This support is provided to the poor sma andhoders, tenants, share-croppers (men/women) and femae headed farming househods to improve their agricutura production, food security and income generation. Support is provided to sma and owners who have one or two acres of and. The objectives of this mode are to: Support sma andhoders/needy farmers for crop cutivation through provision of agri-input. Enhance crop productivity and thus income of farmers. Better management of agricutura resources. Improve quaity of crops. Agri-Kit for farmers Mode-3 Agricutura too kits are provided to those farmers and sma andhoders who need support for agricutura activities or who have ost their farming toos and other essentia items during any disaster. These too kits are designed in consutation with oca farmers. A standard too kit may incude 02 hand hoes (khurpa), 02 sickes (daranti), 01 spade/shove (becha), 01 digger (kuda), 02 rake (kasaa) and 01 axe (kuhari). Other items may incude ivestock water containers, feeding-boxes etc. These supports enabe sma andhoders/poor farmers to effectivey undertake their day-to-day agricutura work (weeding, hoeing, watering, managing kitchen gardens etc.). Mode-4 Provision of Livestock (Goats) Rearing of ivestock is the argest socioeconomic activity in rura areas adding status and prestige to the owners and making major contribution to their diet as we. Livestock refers to catte, buffaoes, sheep, goats and poutry in Pakistan. Livestock activity is responsibe for about haf of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Amost a rura househods have one or more of these animas. Livestock is a source of food (mik and meat) and cash returns to buy food and other househod items. Goats are a very vauabe resource of income for vunerabe and poor househods, particuary during crisis. The objectives of this mode are to: Promote ivestock rearing for income generation at househod eve. Increase mik and meat production for income generation of individuas. Vaccinate ivestock to decrease the prevaence and incidence of diseases. To deveop sma ivestock farms for income generation and food security. Mode-5 Provision of Poutry Package In this mode, a package is provided to femae members of the househod who are invoved in poutry business. Poutry is procured from oca markets and vaccinated prior to distribution in the target communities to minimize the risk of bird fu outbreaks. Each beneficiary househod is provided with 12 poutry birds (10 hens and 2 cocks) and 50 kg feed. This is expected to contribute towards food security and income generation for the beneficiaries by seing chickens and eggs in the oca markets. Liveihood program provides feed and poutry vaccination to decrease the ratio of diseases and feed. Mode-6 Kitchen Gardening The mode of kitchen gardening not ony provides fresh vegetabes and fruits for the famiies but coud aso generate income from the sae of kitchen garden products. This mode can be practicay appied in most of the rura househods and is cost effective for rura communities. In this mode HANDS provides support 57 This mode focuses on estabishment of sma poutry hatcheries or backyard poutry rearing. Sma poutry hatchery unit is capabe of hatching eggs. The beneficiary is abe to use and se the hatched chickens in the neighborhoods. Liveihood Enhancement (on farm) has panned to estabish a poutry hatchery unit at district eve which is capabe of hatching 10,00015,000 eggs. The hatched chickens are distributed to poor women of the famiies in target area to use as food security and income generation. The beneficiaries are abe to use and se the grown up chickens in the nearby market. This mechanism invoves training of beneficiaries, distribution of 10 chickens to each househod for rearing, a poutry cage and one time suppy of poutry feed to each famiy. HANDS Profie

About 45 sma poutry hatcheries are in the process of estabishment under this mode. Mode-9 Mode-8 Cash for Work and Food for Work Community Nurseries The mode of Community Nursery refers to socia forestry. The aim is to maintain and improve ecoogica baance through forestation and contribute towards increasing environmenta awareness aong with income generation and empoyment. These nurseries are focused on fruits, vegetabes, wood for fue and pants for gardening. The aim of socia forestry is to provide high quaity seeds, pants to sma and margina farmers to increase agricutura productivity and farm earnings. This mode focuses on restoration of damaged/affected on far, and off farm infrastructure schemes, incuding irrigation channes, water courses, ivestock/water ponds, feeder roads, pedestrian trais, cuverts, food protection bunds etc. Repair/restoration of infrastructure is agreed with the oca community and with the reevant The enterprise uses a variety of activities to increase awareness about the necessity of panting trees and to increase the number and variety of trees for timber, fue and fruit, not ony to meet the basic needs but aso to restore the ecoogica baance. Severa criteria are required to be met before the restoration of infrastructure e.g. the infrastructure in question must be of vaue and use to the whoe of target community, or to a arge proportion of the popuation. Wages paid/food distributed on weeky basis, for an average work of 12 to 15 days, based on the persona attendance sheet of each beneficiary. Proposed Activities: Househod eve: Latrines, water tanks, kitchen gardening, shop repair, agricutura and rehabiitation, fied terracing, soi stabiization to protect houses, ivestock shades etc. Group eve: Activities meant for various interest groups in the community e.g. sanitation, drinking water, water courses, foot track etc. Community Leve: Activities which benefit the community at arge such as repair of roads, water suppy schemes, repair of schoos and heath centers, ink road, water harvesting infrastructure, protection of degraded and as disaster mitigation measures etc. The objectives of this mode are to: Secure food for those who have ost grain stocks and are unabe to cutivate seasona crop due to ack of financia assistance. Support femae headed famiies and househods headed by orphans (under 18), without sufficient income source or (extended) famiy support. Faciitate househods that incude famiy members with chronic diseases and serious medica conditions, physicay or mentay disabed members without any sources/adequate sources of income. Mode-10 Socia Mobiization for Micro Finance In this mode Liveihood Enhancement program provides micro finance services to the communities in the form of groups. This is done with bank assistance to enhance capacity of group members by enabing them to identify, seect, impement and manage their income generation activities. It is one of the best practices of socia mobiization/group organization for poor community groups in accordance with bank poicies. Estabishment of a shop under micro finance The objectives of this mode are to: Provide micro-finance assistance to potentia members of the community. Strengthen the soidarity and cohesiveness of prospective borrowers and mobiize them in to viabe groups through the process of socia awareness. Enhance capacity of group members by enabing them to identify, seect, impement and manage their income generation activities smoothy. Provide basic iteracy and record keeping training to group coordinator. Motivate the groups for mandatory oan insurance. Credit Poicy Criteria: The criteria incudes credit intervention through group ending, persona guarantee, CNIC, Age 18 to 58, group size 3-12, minimum 2 years experience in 59 HANDS Profie

Loan Categories: Agricutura Deveopment Loan - Livestock Deveopment Loan - Working Capita Loan Ti now 52,453 community members have been benefited through this microfinance mode. Mode-11 Interest Free Loan Scheme (IFLs) HANDS aunched the Qarz-e-Hasana Scheme on May 2014; it is based on the principes of transparency and merit. The scheme is being impemented in three districts; the oan is without any markup. HANDS has estabished oan centers in its districts offices at Thatta, Badin and Lasbea. Project is operating from 1st Nov from existing HANDS DOs at Thatta, Badin and Lasbea. Objectives. Make Interest Free Loans (IFL) avaiabe to men, women and youth from poor, vunerabe and marginaized househods, not yet tapped by the microfinance sector, so that they may engage in productive economic activities that wi improve their ives and aow them to positivey contribute to the economy. Estabish and/or strengthen Urban and Rura Branches, and/ or Union Counci based Community Loan Centers, capabe of assessing, distributing and recovering Interest Free Loans to those househods on a Poverty Score Card of Support femae participation and incusion in economic activities, by disbursing at east 50% of the oans to women and persons with different abiities. Encourage behaviora change by demanding oan beneficiaries to ensure specific heath and education practices. Enhance the entrepreneuria competencies amongst oan beneficiaries by extending services as a PLUS dimension of the Scheme, e.g. enterprise training and counseing, market inkages, financia iteracy and numeracy training. 8 Liveihood Enhancement Program Mode-12 Integrated Society for Action & Learning Initiative (MISALI) HANDS have vast experience in impementation of integrated community deveopment projects and have deveoped many mode viages. Now HANDS with the coaboration of phianthropist funding, initiated MISALI projects in 13 districts and 03 provinces of Pakistan Sindh, Punjab and Baochistan and target areas of this project are 78 viages of districts Matiari, Saheed Banizeerabad, Karachi Rura, Karachi Urban, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Aah Yar, Sanghar, Thatta, Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Umerkot, Muzaffargarh and Jaffarabad. A Indicators reated to MDGs and SDGs are focused and HANDS MISALI team works to achieve these indicators for the sustainabe deveopment. 9 Liveihood Enhancement Program Best Practice Training Modes Mode-13 Capacity Buiding Trainings Liveihood Enhancement program conducts trainings for communities on need and demand basis. Before initiation of any intervention, trainings are conducted in respective sector. Different training needs are assessed before or during any intervention and trainings are imparted as per requirement. The capacity Buiding package of Liveihood Enhancement On-Farm program incudes trainings on agricuture deveopment, ivestock management, poutry management, Nationwide Financia Literacy Program (NFLP) and orientation workshop (CMST). Objective: The objectives of this training mode are to: Buid the capacity of the communities/groups/cbos. Enhance quaity and quantity of product. Liveihood Enhancement (Off-Farm) Liveihood (off farm) promotes economic empowerment with specia focus on women. The objective is to make financiay sef-reiant, skied and sociay secure society. The program focuses on provision of ski training and estabishment of community based enterprises. Through these services, the program faciitates the needy and poor communities for upifting their socioeconomic status. Most of the best practice modes of iveihood program are service as we as training based. Foowing are the HANDS Liveihood Enhancement (Off farm) program best practice modes of service and training. Best Practice Service Modes Mode-1 Enterprise Deveopment / Entrepreneurship This mode aims at providing income generation activities for socioeconomic stabiity of underprivieged peope in target popuation. Methodoogy: Conduction of FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) and webeing ranking in target popuation. Poverty scoring of househod and seection of beneficiaries Deveopment of Liveihood Investment Pan (LIP) Transfer of assets aong with appropriate training (Enterprise Deveopment and Product Deveopment) of the seected beneficiaries. Linkages of beneficiaries with oca government, commercia market, Hunarmand Markaz and non government organization. Formation of Common Interest Group (CIG) Orientation to oca Community Based Organization (CBO) The income generation thus starts and inkages of beneficiaries deveoped with oca market, oca government, Hunarmand Markaz or NGOs for dispay and sae of products. The objectives of Sughar (oca skied women) mode are to: Provide sef empoyment opportunities through ski enhancement trainings. Faciitate system of suppies and marketing iaisons. Estabish ink with HANDS dispay centre. Methodoogy: Unti now 6,376 men & women have been benefited from this mode. Mode-2 Trainees (Sughars) identified and seected from the target viage aong with identification of oca trainer for trainings. Conduction of training at viage eve or at Hunarmand Training Centre (HTC). Sughars provided with sampe and required materia for making of the products. HANDS technica staff visits the viages to keep check on work quaity of Sughars. In case of any modification in quaity, Sughars are responsibe to make changes/ater the product as per agreed design, quaity, time and ToR. CBO is responsibe to keep cose coordination with Sughars to ensure quaity and timey deivery of order. The Sughar is inked with oca market/dispay centre for suppies and sae of their products. The Sughars' products incude cut work, adies dresses, oca embroidery, caps and fie foders. 11 Liveihood Enhancement Program Mode-3 Hunarmand Markaz (Dispay Centre) This best practice mode of the program is introduced to provide a centre for the dispay of marketing products. The centre not ony provides opportunity for oca craftsmen to dispay their products for marketing but aso provide opportunity to oca businessmen to avai these products. The objectives of this mode are to: Promote oca handicraft for income generation. Dispay products made by oca artisans/ craftsmen for sae/purchase. Create iaison for marketing of products of oca artisans. Methodoogy: The process of estabishing Hunarmand Markaz (HM) incudes: seection of appropriate pace for HM and hiring of staff. The staff is appropriatey and adequatey trained in a technica aspects of running the HM. A ToR IS signed with Hunarmand and this is based on 80:20 ratio i.e 80% of money from sae of the product is kept by the artisan and 20% by the HM which is utiized for its ongoing expenditures and sustainabiity. Inspection of sampe products produced / manufactured. After inspection of products, orders are paced in buk to Hunarmand (artisan). Products are dispayed at HM for sae and purchase. The HM is utiized not ony for dispay and marketing of products but aso for monitoring the quaity of the products, exporation of innovative designs/ideas to improve the quaity and further promotion of products. The staff of HM is aso responsibe for creating iaisons not ony in oca market but other stakehoders as we for promotion of products. Enabe participants to identify business ideas for their enterprising businesses, and earn to hep their own cients when needed. Encourage participants for generating business ideas for themseves. MISALI viages are those which are being supported by HANDS in the fied of Heath, Education and Liveihood. There are ten MISALI viages in Karachi which are being supported by HANDS. In every MISALI viage HANDS has seected five viagers and each viager was given 20 hens and 04 cocks. Purpose of the idea was to provide nutrition to the famiy of the beneficiary. In Pan Para Chacha Abduah was seected as beneficiary aong with four others. Chacha Abduah was given 20 Hens and 04 Cocks four months ago. He took care of them and now hens are aying eggs. Chacha Abduah is utiizing these eggs in his famiy and aso seing them for Rs. 15 per egg. HANDS provided some assets to Chacha Abduah and he has taken care of the assets very we; now the goa of both HANDS and Chacha Abduah has been successfuy achieved. Lesson Learned: Lesson earned from this story is that nothing goes waste everything is productive, the thing needed is patience. When chicks were given to Chacha Abduah he took care of them and kept patient and now is enjoying the fruit of his patience. Masi Sughra was seected as the iveihood beneficiary in HANDS MISALI project. Two goats were purchased for her and were handed over to beneficiary about 6 months ago. She took good care of both goats and now one of them has deivered two kids. Masi Sughra is feeing very happy and is expecting more offspring from other one. She has pan to se mik of her goat and earn some money. She aso has a pan to se some of the goats when they become more in numbers. Masi Sughra reay took very good care of goats and now she is enjoying its fruit. Hopefuy she wi aso take good care of recenty born kids. Nothing Goes Waste one takes good care of his/her assets then he/she wi definitey become successfu. As it is proved in this case study that Masi Sughra has taken good care of her goats and now today she is enjoying fruit of her hard work and care.
