3 01 The Agri-food Sector in Europe The agri-food industry is Europe s main manufacturing activity, accounting for 14.9% of total turnover and a value of over one million euros. It comprises approx. 287,000 companies (EU-27), 99.1% of which are SMEs (with less than 250 employees). It employs 4.25 million people and accounts for 49.3% of total production. The Spanish agri-food industry ranks fifth in sales behind Germany, France, Italy and the UK. 2

It consists of 28,762 companies 15.8% of all the Spanish manufacturing industry companies and 96% of them are SMEs. The Spanish agri-food industry closed 2013 with a total turnover of billion in net sales, a nominal increase of 1.9% compared to the previous year. The industry subsectors for meat (21.6%), alcoholic beverage production (10.5%) and dairy (10.1%) contributed 42.2% of total production for the food and drink sector, with total combined production accounting for billion. 5 03 The Agri-food Sector in Valencian Region Economic data The agri-food sector in Valencian Region comprises 1,987 companies (Data MERCASA ). According to figures from the Valencian Institute of Statistics (IVE), the agri-food sector represents approximately 10% of all industrial companies in Valencian Region, and 14% of industrial employment and net turnover. Regarding the national total, Valencian Region accounts for 8% of Spanish agri-food industry companies, 9% of employment and 7% of Spanish agri-food industry turnover. BY SUBSECTOR Companies and products In 2012, (latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, (MAGRAMA) the agri-food industry leading subsectors in terms of sales in Valencian Region are: Meat industries Canned fruit and vegetables Milled products Bread, pastries and pastas Regarding this activity, the sectors that employ most people are: Bread, pastries and pastas Meat industries Canned fruit and vegetables The highest turnover comes from the meat industries subsector with almost billion, followed by canned fruit and vegetables with In terms of number of employees, the bread, pastries and pastas subsector is the greatest employer (7,608 people), followed by meat industries (5,827). 7 03 Industry distribution Valencian Region has: 2,574 retail establishments specialising in food (Valencia: 47.6%; Alicante: 40.5%; Castellon: 11.9%). 1,760 supermarkets and 45 hypermarkets. Street vendors and markets reach the figure of 6,275 (15.9% of the national total). Regarding activities related to catering services and bars, Valencian Region is the third autonomous region in number, accounting for 11.6% (32,532) of the Spanish total (Valencia: 44.4%; Alicante: 43.9%; Castellon: 11.7%). 6

8 Exports 03 In 2013, the Valencian Region was the 3rd ranking region in agri-food product exports, accounting for 15% of the Spanish total. Agricultural, fisheries, food and forestry exports in 2014 stood at billion, 3% more than in By product, fruit is the agri-food product most exported by the Region, accounting for 57% of all agri-food exports. Citrus fruit is by far the leader with million and 38% of Valencian Region agri-food exports. Analysing the performance of other products in the last year, we must also highlight the positive trend in meat exports, the stability of vegetable exports and the good performance of nuts, wine and olive oil with increased values of exports. France is the top destination (23% of the total and up 5%) representing, along with Germany and Italy, 50% of agri-food exports. 9 Training and knowledge 03 Valencian Region offers various qualifications closely linked to the agri-food sector: Biotechnology Food Science and Technology Human nutrition and Dietetics Agricultural Engineering Pharmacy Veterinary Science The Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) is the most reputed institution in the country for agri-food studies and it is highly prestigious worldwide. In the field of agricultural science, it ranks in the world s TOP 50 according to Microsoft Academic Research. Its agricultural engineering studies are the only qualification of this kind in Spain and are backed by the most prestigious US professional certification: ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). Cardenal Herrera CEU University (CEU-UCH) offers a Food Safety postgraduate course with different lines of research for doctoral students related to Food Safety. In 2012, this university signed a cooperation and collaboration agreement with FEDACOVA, Valencian Region Agri-food Business Federation. This enables Veterinary Science students from CEU-UCH to follow work experience programmes in the agri-food sector industry in the Region in order to complete their university education. Differentiation of the industry Valencian Region has 22 foods and drinks with Designation of Origin or Protected Geographic Indication, of the 176 designations of origin in Spain (Data: MAGRAMA 2013). Valencian Region has 50,000 hectares of organic farming land (2012), which accounts for 3.1% of all organic farming land in Spain. There are also 22 organic livestock farms, 0.4% of the Spanish total. 8

10 04 Why Valencian Region? Key factors Regarding total Spanish exports, Valencian Region is the third autonomous region with 14.92%, and the first for Fresh fruit (44.86%). The value of Valencian exports in 2013 reached a new all-time record, exceeding the previous year s figure by 13%. Valencian Region ranks in the top spots in Spain in restaurants, cafés, bars and hotels, coming in third place with 11.6% (32,532) of the Spanish total. This Region has 22 of the foods and drinks with Designation of Origin or Protected Geographic Indication. It has the country s most reputed university in this field which has great international prestige, as recognised by the main rankings (UPV). 9

11 03 05 Who s who? FEDACOVA - Valencian Region Agri-food Business Federation Group of 36 associations that in turn represent 2,800 companies; 70% of the sector as a whole. It not only represents the sector but also acts as a liaison with Public Bodies as well as defending its interests inside and outside the Region. FEDACOVA promotes quality, training and innovation among its members. AINIA Agri-food Industry Technology Institute It comprises over 900 companies, mainly from the food sector. It belongs to the European Food Institutes and other national and international organisations. The institute is the Group coordinator for the Agri-food Sector in the Enterprise Europe network along with more than 35 European regions. It helps sector companies to compete with new products and improved processes, and offers new technologies for food quality and safety, as well as offering different services such as R&D projects, technological aid, analytical services, specialised training, food legislation, etc. FIAB Spanish Food and Drink Industry Federation It currently covers 50 associations, representing over 5,000 companies. It works at national, regional and international level in areas such as internationalisation, R&D+i, legislation and food safety, agricultural policy, environment, nutrition, training, tax regulations and communication, always with the aim of fostering increased competitiveness in this industry. 10
