IOBC/WPRS Working Group on Integrated Protection of Stored Products Convenor Christos Athanassiou Agricultural University of Athens Laboratory of Agricultural Zoology and Entomology 75 Iera Odos, Athens, GREECE

IOBC-wprs Working groups Working Groups Crop-focused: Integrated control / protection in / of citrus crops fruit crops (5 sub groups) protected crops temperate climate Mediterranean climate Method-focused Breeding for plant resistance to pests and diseases GMO's in integrated plant production Induced resistance in plants against insects and diseases Landscape management for functional biodiversity Multitrophic interactions in soil Pesticides and beneficial organisms Pheromones and other semio-chemicals in integrated production Pest-focused Insect pathogens and entomoparasitic nematodes (5 sub groups) Integrated control of mite pests Integrated control of plant pathogens field vegetables oilseed crops (2 sub groups) olive crops stored products viticulture (7 sub groups)

History and structure of our WG Prof. Georgio Dominichini Firenze, 1992 Milano, 1993 Prague, 1994 Firenze, 1996 Prof. Shlomo Navarro Kusadasi, 2003 Prague, 2005 Poznan, 2007 Dr. Cornel Adler Zurich, 1997 Berlin, 1999 Lisbon, 2001 Vice-Convenors Dr Cornel Adler Dr Jordi Riudavets Liaison officer Dr Phyllis Weintraub

What is our Working Group on Integrated Protection of Stored Products? Our WG deals with durable plant products such as: Cereal grains (wheat, barley, paddy etc.) Pulses (peas and beans) Dried fruits and nuts Seeds/Oil seeds (sunflower, canola) Herbs, spices, beverages (coffee, cacao, tea) Dehydrated vegetables, plant products, roots (cassava, turmeric rhizomes) Dehydrated animal products (dried meat, fish, skins etc.) Wood and wood products Museum artefacts Main problems in these products are insects, mites, rodents, fungi, toxins, contaminants

The IOBC/WPRS WG on Integrated Protection of Stored Products meets every two years to discuss new findings on: All aspects of biological control Biology of stored product pests Pheromones, traps and other methods to detect stored product pests Physical, chemical and other techniques for stored product pest control Integrated pest prevention methods during storage, transportation, and handling- Overviews/future trends

Significant global changes in post-harvest of durables, during the last decade Phase out of methyl bromide (MB) in developed countries by 2005 and in developing countries by 2015 Concerns of developing countries about treatments without MB and availability of fewer fumigants Development of insect resistance to phosphine (the main MB alternative) and other traditional pesticides Re-registration of more than 20 traditional substances Increased consumers demand for residue-free food and organic products Increased value of durable products New regulations for food safety, HACCP, phytosanitary regulations EPPO/EU, FAO, OECD Increased concern on the urban role of stored-product insects Vectors of non food-born diseases Aflatoxin carriers Enterococci-contaminants Insect fragments Allergens

Other WGs related with IPM in stored products? Estoril, Portugal June 27- July 2, 2010 Food safety Food science Stored-product engineering Controlled atmospheres Modified atmospheres Fumigants alternatives to methyl bromide Integrated Protection of Stored Products :: is globally the only WG that covers the subject of post-harvest IPM

Activities of our WG Organization of the WG meetings Editing/publication of the Proceedings our the meetings of our WG Activities related with coordination, co-operations and networking (COST, EUREKA, ERA NET) Participation/Co-organization of parallel activities related to the topics covered by the WG (Pre- of Post-Conference Workshops, etc.)

7 Sessions: General topics Monitoring, trapping, mating disruption Biological control Detection-Immunological detection Biology-Faunisics-Storage technology-losses Chemical control-igrs- Phytochemicals Controlled/Modified atmospheres During the meeting we had: 82 participants, 24 countries 38 oral presentations 15 poster presentations

7 Sessions: Overviews and trends of storedproduct protection Detection, trapping, pheromones Biological control Phytochemicals Biology and Ecology of stored product pests Physical, chemical and other techniques IPM methods during storage During the meeting we had: 90 participants, 25 countries 41 oral presentations 20 poster presentations

Meeting of the IOBC/WPRS Working Group on Integrated Protection of Stored Products, Campobasso, ITALY, June 29 -July 2, Sessions: Overviews and new trends of storedproduct protection Monitoring, sampling, trapping and semiochemicals Biological control Phytochemicals Fumigation and controlled atmospheres Chemical control IPM and legislation

During the 2009 meeting we had: 130 registered participants, 29 countries 48 oral presentations 55 poster presentations The higher number of participants and abstracts submitted so far Fruitful discussions on: Increased interest of potential participants from other palearctic and non-palearctic regions Accelerate the publication of the proceedings Enlarging the scope of our WG, with other, post-harvest orientated topics Webpage-next venue: Greece, Local Organizer: Dr. Nickolas Kavallieratos

Topics of the papers presented during the meeting Pest subject of the papers presented during the meeting

Integrated Protection of Stored Products is not only a Working Group of WPRS

Countries participated in the WG meeting Number of participants from non-wprs countries
