17 ALFALFA 10 TIPS TO TOP ALFALFA TONNAGE Select a field with good drainage and free of weeds. Weed control should be done prior to stand establishment. Lime your fields 6 months to a year prior to seeding. Soil ph should be 6.8 to 7.5. Soil test. Phosphorous levels should be lbs., Potassium lbs., Boron 3 lbs. and Sulfur 40 lbs. Prepare a firm seedbed. Firm seed to soil contact is necessary for maximum emergence. Choose an alfalfa with the genetic background to repay you for your extra efforts. Plant alfalfa seeds ¼ -½ deep. Seed lbs. per acre with direct seeding, lbs. per acre with a nurse crop. Monitor insects. Alfalfa weevil during the first crop and Potato Leaf Hopper during the second through fourth crop. Adjust cutting schedules or spray as needed. Fight diseases with broad disease resistance base Harvest forage at late bud stage for maximum forage yield and quality. Do not harvest from September 1 through October 15 to allow root carbohydrates to replenish themselves. Maintain fertility. Top dress after 1st and 3rd cuttings. Each ton of forage removes 12 lbs. of Phosphorus, 50 lbs. of Potassium, 0.4 lbs. of Boron and 6 lbs. of Sulfur. Consult your Rupp sales representative about planting dates in your area. Timely seeding increases forage yield and reduces the risk of winter injury. Before seeding - soil testing is recommended to determine fertilization needs. Prepare a smooth, even seedbed. Or, Trical 815 can also be successfully no-till seeded after summer crops (soybeans, sorghum, etc.). Accurate seeding is vital. Seed 100 to 120 lbs. per acre with a grain drill at a depth of 1½ inches. Use a drill setting approximately 10% higher than wheat to account for the larger seed size of the triticale. Note: if early planting results in dense fall growth, light grazing or a forage cut may improve winter survival. FERTILITY Application of 40 to 80 lbs. of both actual P and actual K is a very general recommendation. Soil test to determine more specific recommendations. Best to apply P and K in the fall. Nitrogen is very important. At least 100 lbs. of available N is needed. N needs are seldom met from manure alone. Fall apply 30 to 35 lbs. of actual N, and add 60 to 65 lbs in the spring. Spring applied N is very important for optimum protein levels. Trical 815 will do well on ground that favors other small grains WEED CONTROL Trical 815 s vigorous growth usually suppresses broadleaf weed competition. Where herbicides are needed, consult with your supplier for information about the best choice. HARVEST For outstanding forage quality while still achieving yields, the optimum harvest stage is at flag leaf or boot, prior to head emergence. Protein content at this stage will vary depending on fertility, moisture, and other growing conditions, but generally will range between 14 and 19%. PALATABILITY Highly palatable. Harvested on time, Trical 815 can be used as silage, balage, or hay. RISKS Every product has risks; the following information can help you avoid some possible problems: Winter injury: Timely seeding and good fertilization will reduce the risk of winter injury. Lodging: High fertility conditions and succulent growth can cause lodging. Plan to harvest earlier than normal under those conditions. Stands: Careful seedbed preparation and seeding methods favor good stands. Forage Quality: Proper fertility and timely harvest favor high forage quality. ALFALFA/FORAGE ALFALFA & FORAGE MIXES 33

19 SORGHUM SUDANGRASS FORAGE FEAST Forage products marketed under the Forage Feast brand have been selected based on their superior forage qualities. Our initial introduction included a Genuity Roundup Ready alfalfa and BMR sorghum-sudangrass hybrids. PRO-TON+ Pro-Ton+ is a summer planted forage that is a mixture of BMR Sorghum Sudangrass, soybeans and forage peas. It is an excellent yielding summer forage that can be used for silage, balage or grazing. Expected Nutritional Benefit Crude Protein 15-20% ADF 35-40% *Nutritional benefits will vary with harvest dates. TDF 50-60% NDF 50-55% Pro-Ton+ works well as a summer to early fall annual forage. It gives a producer the option of growing a high yielding forage which is ready to graze approximately 21 days after planting, at a height of 16 to 29. Also, rotational grazing works well, as the regrowth is very rapid allowing heavy grazing. The high quality forage of Pro-Ton+ is attributed to the brown mid-rib sorghum sudangrass. Pro-Ton+ is very digestible, and is high in lysine and low in lignin. The soybeans and peas are high in protein providing a balanced ration essential to good growth. PRO-TON+ MANAGEMENT PRACTICES SEEDING Pro-Ton+ should be drilled (using the soybean setting). Planting Pro-Ton+ in warm soils (60-65 ) will enable quick emergence, which will help suppress weed competition. Seed Rate: lbs/acre Seeding Depth: ½ - 1 Fertilizer Requirements: lbs. NPK HARVEST Pro-Ton+ is usually ready to cut days after planting. FORAGE FEAST DSBMR603 This dry stalk sorghum sudangrass hybrid produces a high tillering high quality forage that has excellent early vigor. The high leaf to stem ratio means that you can count on high protein. The digestibility of this hybrid has been increased by 20% due to the BMR 6 trait. With the dry stalk gene it allows a more timely harvest and helps to get the crop baled and out of the field before it gets rained on while drying. Low water requirements. Growth Habit: Upright Maturity: days to boot Highly palatable and digestible. Midrib Type: Brown FORAGE FEAST SSBMR907 Forage Feast SSBMR907 is a dryland hybrid with sweet juicy stalks. It has reduced lignin which improves two things: fiber digestibility and palatability. The increase in efficiency and utilization in SSBMR907 will give you better gain per acre. We have observed yields of 5-8 DM tons/per acre. This hybrid is good for dryland grazing, hay, balage, or silage. It has an extensive deep root system allowing it to continue its growth under dry conditions. Replacement for SSBMR901 High yield potential Growth Habit: Upright Maturity: days to boot Brown Midrib Highly palatable Midrib Type: Brown FORAGE FEAST SSBMR601 High yield potential. Plant Height: inches Seeding Rates: #/a Downy Mildew resistance Low water requirement Plant Height: inches Seeding Rates: #/a BMR SORGHUM- SUDANGRASS MANAGEMENT PRACTICES SEEDING Soil temperature should be at least 60 F. Plant between April 10-July 10. Can be no-tilled into the stubble of winter and spring crops. Planting depth should be 1 Do not plant in soils with ph greater than 7.5 to 8.0. Chlorosis can be a severe problem. HARVEST SSBMR901 is normally harvested days after seeding. DSBMR603 is normally harvested days after seeding. SSBMR601 is normally harvested days after seeding. Protein will decline as harvest is delayed, but energy will increase upon heading because of continued sugar formation in the sorghum stalks and leaves and carbohydrate deposition in the developing grains. Avoid Nitrate and Prussic Acid Poisoning from Sorghum Avoid large nitrogen applications prior to expected drought periods as this can increase Prussic Acid concentration for several weeks after application. ALFALFA/FORAGE Pro-Ton+ planted in late May can provide a second cutting in the fall. Yield potential on two cuttings is ton at 50% dry matter. Pro-Ton+ planted after wheat in Mid-July normally yields ton per acre at 50% dry matter. **Prussic Acid levels will rise after a frost or freezing. It is recommended to remove animals from pasture for at least 7 days to allow Prussic Acid levels to drop to a safe level. SSBMR601 is a high yielding brachytic dwarf forage sorghum hybrid that has two traits that establish its superiority. Its plant height at 6-7 feet will lead to superior standability, and the BMR trait indicates reduced lignin for increased digestibility. The brachytic trait really condenses the intermodal length of the hybrid, leading to a very compact plant with dense leaf canopy. A high yielding BMR 6 hybrid. Very wide leaves, creating a dense immense canopy. Do not harvest drought-damaged plants within four days following a good rain. Do not greenchop within seven days of a killing frost. Cut at a higher stubble height, nitrates tend to accumulate in the lower stalk. Growth Habit: Brachytic Dwarf Maturity: 85 days to soft dough Midrib Type: Brown Plant Height: 6-7 feet Seeding Rates: #/a Wait one month before feeding silage to give Prussic Acid enough time to escape. 20 FORAGE OAT MIXES EVERLEAF OATS EverLeaf 126 is a true spring oat with dark green foliage, an erect growth habit and very good Standability. It has leaves that actually extend above the canopy at heading. EverLeaf 126 is a delayed heading oat and much of its forage mass and quality come from an extended maturity. Since the plant is naturally vegetative for a longer period, biomass accumulation is extraordinary. It has a compact panicle that offers an attractive product when baled. Seeding Rate: Alone: #/a With Alfalfa: #/a EVERLEAF 126 MANAGEMENT NOTES EverLeaf 126 has the same requirements as other spring planted forage cereals. Adequate seed bed preparation is important as are seeding rate and fertility. Everleaf 126 have a great deal of biomass and therefore insufficient levels of plant food and water will limit overall productive capacity. Dry land production should be limited to heavier soils with adequate rainfall. These oats exhibit completely new genetics and provide an excellent opportunity for spring planted forage for manure management. Always test forages for nitrate levels when grown in high nitrogen regimes. MILKMAX MILKMAX is a 40/60 blend of EverLeaf forage oats and Forager Peas which are very high yielding, excellent forage quality pea. Seeding Rate: Alone: #/a With Alfalfa: #/a Used as a nurse crop for newly seeded alfalfa, the delayed heading feature allows newly planted alfalfa stands to become more uniformly established before first cutting. This translates into higher quality forage and less damage to seedling alfalfa plants with immature crowns. HEIGHT EverLeaf 126 height is medium to tall. Under good moisture and fertility heads emerge at 48 to 52 inches. These oats respond well under irrigation and stand erect and resist lodging. HARVEST STAGES At boot stage, EverLeaf 126 is highest in crude protein and in total digestible fiber. At milk stage forage tonnage is optimized with corresponding reduction in crude protein and digestibility. At Grain Harvest the straw remains somewhat green and pliable because of increased moisture content. This creates an excellent opportunity for baled product. For the oat straw market, swathing at harvest is recommended for maximum drydown. DISEASE RESISTANCE In many production areas rust has adapted to conventional forage oats and is a significant impediment to quality and tonnage. EverLeaf 126 has shown resistance to rust and most other leaf and stem diseases. Evaluation is continuing on rust resistance and tolerance.
