1 NC Small Grain Growers Association Wheat Seeding Rate Trial July 2, 2013 SG Purpose: To compare current standard seeding rates in eastern North Carolina to differing rates. Crop response to each seeding rate was studied. Trial Summary: This trial was planted on November 19 with Dynagro Shirley. The trial was planted as a randomized complete block design with 4 reps. The plots were 6 wide and 40 long. Plots were planted with a 6 Great Plains seed drill with nine 7.5 inch drills. The trial was harvested on June 13 with a K2 Gleaner equipped with a Harvest Master Grain Gauge. Lime and fertilizer was applied preplant based on soil samples and NCDA recommendations. All other maintenance applications and fertilizer applications are listed on the attached Activity Log. The treatments are listed below in Table 1. Data Summary: Table 1. Treatment List Treatment 1 900,000 Seeds/A 2 1,200,000 Seeds/A 3 1,500,000 Seeds/A 4 1,800,000 Seeds/A 5 2,100,000 Seeds/A Early season data is listed below in Table 2. In this trial, seeding rate had no effect on early season vigor. Final plant stands were on target with intended planting rate, however when looking at tiller numbers on March 18 there were no differences among the treatments. Vigor was a rated with a 1-5 scale with 1 being very good and 5 being poor. Table 2. 2 Means followed by same letter do not significantly differ (P=.10, LSD) Pre harvest data is listed below in Table 3. In looking at final plant height, heads per square foot, head length, and kernels per 5 heads; there were no significant differences among treatments. Table 3. In this trial there were no significant differences among the treatments when comparing % moisture, test weight or dry yield. Conclusions: Table 4. Harvest Data 6/13/2013 Treatment % Moisture Test Weight Dry Yield 900,000 Seeds/A 13.4 a 62.2 a a 1,200,000 Seeds/A 12.9 a 60.2 a a 1,500,000 Seeds/A 13.4 a 62.2 a a 1,800,000 Seeds/A 12.5 a 59.2 a a 2,100,000 Seeds/A 12.9 a 62.4 a 114 a Means followed by same letter do not significantly differ (P=.10, LSD) In this trial, there were no differences among the different seeding rates when comparing any aspect of the crop that was rated. Therefore, one may conclude that under adequate conditions for tillering, there will not be an advantage in using higher seeding rates. Tillering was similar and adequate in all of these seeding rates at this planting date. Because of this there were no differences in height, number of heads, head size, or kernels per head. And because all of these numbers were similar, yield was also similar among all treatments. The results would likely have been different if this trial had been planted later, or conducted under different growing conditions, or with a different variety. If fall and spring tillering are poor then the higher seeding rates often have more tillers and more potential for higher yields. This was not the case under the circumstances of this trial, and thus a well timed planting date offers no room for improvement when comparing these plant populations and this variety. Page 2
