What is a Generic product? With today s tight margins and increasing demands for quality produce, arable and vegetable crop growers need to be confident that the crop protection products they are using are going to perform. Once an active ingredient that has been created and developed by Syngenta reaches the end of its patent period, other manufacturers can produce and sell it under the generic active name. However, whilst generic products may contain the same active ingredient, the way they are made and formulated can be entirely different and have a dramatic effect on performance. Even the very best active ingredient can be rendered virtually ineffective or made difficult to use with the wrong formulation. Generic products can be manufactured anywhere in the world and will often be manufactured to the lowest possible price specification and mostly by third-party chemical companies, in areas where production costs are lowest. After years of research, Syngenta formulation chemists understand precisely how the active ingredients work to get the best results and ensure crop safety. Syngenta has invested millions of Pounds in formulation technology, including a new 5m formulation robot at Jealott s Hill in Berkshire. It is unlikely that any generic supplier has made the same investment in formulation, technology and manufacturing capability. If a product is a poor formulation, this may make a product: Difficult to mix and use Slow to take effect Less effective Unreliable Recent field trials and laboratory analysis have shown genuine Syngenta products are more consistent and more reliable than tested generic products. Analysis carried out by or on behalf of Syngenta have shown that versus generic products tested, Syngenta products regularly deliver: Greater levels of performance Consistent levels of active ingredient More effective formulation Ease of use and better packaging

Case Study: SHIRLAN vs generic fluazinam SHIRLAN has been one of the UK s most successful potato blight fungicides, with outstanding results protecting foliage and tubers from damaging disease attacks. The active ingredient fluazinam came off patent in Syngenta laboratory tests and independent field trials have shown Syngenta s SHIRLAN outperforms the generic fluazinams tested for effective potato blight control. Poor generic formulation quickly separates Poor adhesion of generic product SHIRLAN Generic A Generic B Generic C 1 minute after shaken Results: In 2009 independent field trials, all the generic fluazinam products tested were at least 10% less effective at blight control compared to SHIRLAN and in one case 30% poorer. With the high value of potato crops, no grower can afford the risks of significant yield reduction and reduced tuber quality from blight attack. Even particle size and consistency of SHIRLAN gives good coverage of leaf cells Particle size and irregularity of generics gives poorer coverage of leaf cells The precision manufacturing process of quality Syngenta SHIRLAN ensures consistent particle size and even distribution on the leaf to give the best possible protection from disease. The images shown above come from studies which show that the generic products tested exhibit uneven particle size, with poor distribution on the crop leaf. Variable generic particle size gives poor coverage SHIRLAN 10-30% greater blight control Generic formulation settles out faster and gives poorer coverage 15 minutes after shaken Note: Separation and rapid run off on generics The above bottle test demonstrates potential spray tank stability and crop leaf adhesion. They show three poorer generic formulations that can lead to faster settling out and rapid run off, compared to SHIRLAN. The colour differences clearly highlight that these generic formulations are not the same as Syngenta s SHIRLAN. Under laboratory analysis two of the four generic fluazinam products tested (50%) contained below the legal specification of active ingredient with one sample containing 12% less active ingredient than declared on the label and compromising performance in the field. % foliar blight control SHIRLAN Generic A Generic B Generic C Generic D Source: Eurofins 2009 On average an extra 17.5% control from Shirlan above the three generics tested

Case Study: HALLMARK ZEON vs generic lambda-cyhalothrin When insect pests threaten crop yields and quality, growers have to act fast to prevent damage or virus transmission. HALLMARK ZEON is renowned for its speed of action and ease of use. Extensive research has given the insecticide a wide label approval for convenient use across a vast range of crops. The unique formulation of HALLMARK ZEON delivers the active ingredient, lambda-cyhalothrin, encapsulated within nanotechnology capsules over 300,000 capsules per m 2 when sprayed at standard rates. Almost all of the HALLMARK ZEON 10CS capsules have ruptured on drying HALLMARK ZEON 10CS capsules rupture on drying, releasing the active ingredient which quickly spreads across the surface of the leaf Scanning electron micrographs of Syngenta HALLMARK ZEON 10CS formulation The larger generic 5CS capsules do not rupture to the same extent as HALLMARK ZEON 10CS microcapsules when they dry down Less free active ingredient is visible in dried deposits of generic 5CS capsule Scanning electron micrographs of a generic 5CS formulation Key features Built in UV protection (Ti) Rapid release from patented, polymer coated micro CS Technology Syngenta has unrivalled global experience in CS formulation technology CS formulation binds to both pest and leaf wax Grower benefit Improved field persistence over generic 5CS and other foliar pyrethroids in sunny conditions HALLMARK ZEON Generic 5CS* Excellent pest and crop coverage, delivering rapid pest knockdown Proven over 10 years in all UK growing conditions Rainfast in 1 hour S-Pac (foil free packaging) Ease of use High concentration 10% CS formulation Water based formulation with negligible solvent content Only need to apply half the dose rate of generic CS product. Less packaging and waste Crop safe when used straight or in mixture Freeze protected to prevent frost damage Product is stable in all seasonal conditions Contains a Biocide Broadest crop label Product remains efficacious and does not degrade in the pack over time One product solution, for season round pest control Indicates that we currently lack proof for the generic 5CS * We tested the only generic 5CS product available in the UK as of May The comparisons made in this document are of the key features and are valid as at that date. All tests were performed by Syngenta. 6 Case Study: REGLONE vs generic diquat With harvest the critical culmination of all the season s investment and work, growers can t afford to compromise on a desiccant that doesn t deliver. REGLONE Generic A grower s own trial on a potato crop in Yorkshire highlighted a generic diquat gave a visibly poorer performance on desiccating of haulm, compared to genuine REGLONE. Detailed analysis of generic diquats has also shown some products to be highly acidic, which could have an impact on the stability of the product and pose a risk of reaction with other active ingredients. Results: Independent laboratory trials investigating a direct comparison between REGLONE and a generic counterpart revealed genuine REGLONE had an active ingredient loading of 202 g/l, compared to a 13% below specification shortfall in active ingredient in the generic, at 174 g/l. 210 Other impurities found in some generic diquat products include: High levels of toxic terpyridines High levels of methanol High Alkyl Poly Glucosides with potential for crop damage Active ingredient level (per g/l) Extra 13% a.i in Reglone Where generic diquat has been formulated with a high proportion of adjuvant in an effort to improve performance, there is a risk of the active ingredient being taken up into the plant and an increase in potential crop damage, especially to potato tubers. 150 REGLONE Generic

Case Study: BRAVO vs generic chlorothalonil In ADAS trials BRAVO has outperformed other generic chlorothalonil products tested, with yield increases of up to a tonne per hectare. BRAVO has proven one of the most reliable performing fungicides for effective early season disease control. When weather conditions are wet and highly conducive to disease, growers can be confident the Weatherstik formulation will stick and stay on the leaf, when other generic formulations may wash off. The renowned rainfastness of BRAVO has seen at least 25% greater residual activity against Septoria tritici after just 10mm of rainfall, compared to all tested generic formulations. The performance of one generic saw no effective disease control after 10mm of rain. Where BRAVO is used in tank mix with other fungicides, the combination of genuine Syngenta product has consistently outperformed mixes with generic chlorothalonil worth over 1000 across 100 hectares of wheat cropping. Results: BRAVO retains good performance for disease control even after rain. Performance of poorly formulated generics can be severly reduced or rendered virtually ineffective by just 10mm of rain. 8 Case Study: AMISTAR vs generic azoxystrobin Blocked nozzles caused by poorly formulated generic products can severely disrupt work, and leave crops dangerously exposed to infection if they are not protected. Potato planting came to an abrupt halt at an all important time for one Lincolnshire grower, when the generic azoxystrobin he had been supplied with blocked the nozzles of his application equipment. Although the product had been sold as a parallel import and was purported to be the same as AMISTAR, analysis in the laboratory quickly revealed the presence of a solvent not used in any Syngenta AMISTAR formulation and proving to Syngenta that it was a non approved generic formulation. Furthermore, the product contained impurities that would not be found in AMISTAR. Response Presence of a solvent not used in Syngenta AMISTAR formulation AMISTAR Results: Impurities Generic The remaining generic product was quickly replaced with AMISTAR and potato planting could continue, assured that the crop was protected against Black Dot, Rhizoctonia and soil-borne diseases, and that supermarket protocols were being safely complied with Retention Time

Questions to ask before buying Generic? Delivering more than quality products Are there proven field trials results for the product? Is the product guaranteed crop safe? Is the generic brand permitted by protocols? Is there any technical back-up? Is the product well packed? Is the packaging recyclable? ACTION TIP: Make sure any claims are for the specific brand, not the active ingredient ACTION TIP: Formulation problems can make some products phytotoxic or increase tank mix risks ACTION TIP: Consult with your customer before using any product ACTION TIP: Look for a technical enquiries contact or in-field support ACTION TIP: Poor packaging increases risks of spills, with timeconsuming and costly clean-up ACTION TIP: Non-recyclable packaging has to be treated as hazardous waste, with associated high disposal costs Performance, Support and Safety Syngenta s commitment to delivering quality products goes beyond the $1 billion a year investment in Research and Development, involving over 4000 highly-skilled researchers worldwide.
