1 FNSAU Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit - Somalia Issued July, 29 Climate Data Update June, 29 Current Rainfall and NDVI This report is a compilation of climate data on Somalia that FSNAU and FEWS NET regularly review for analysis. Primary data sources are NOAA/USGC, MARS-JRC and SWALIM. Maps and graphs in this bulletin are produced from three sources: Current Rainfall Estimates and NDVI data are derived from NOAA/CPC, while the rain gauge data is collected by FAO-SWALIM The seasonal profiles on page 2 are produced in collaboration with MARS-JRC. For more information visit mars/about-us/foodsec The Rainfall and NDVI long term trends are derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VEGETATION. For more information visit earlywarning.usgs.gov/adds/ and uploads/138.pdf June 9: Monthly Rain Gauge Data (mm) 2 Barbera Borama Hargeisa Odweyne Luuq6 Baidoa 18 Jowhar Dinsoor 48 Bardhere Afgoye Genale 86 Buale Jamame86 Ceelberde Wajid Hudur Source: Swalim 12 Erigavo Bossasso Baran Elafweyn 12 Burao Qardo Caynabo 1 Garowe Lasanod Beletweyne Halgan Galkayo June 9: Monthly Rainfall Estimates (mm) AWDAL BARI SANAG W. These rainy seasons are separated by two dry spells, Jilaal (January-March) and Hagaa (July-August) Somalia Seasonal Time Line Deyr Rains Jilaal Dry Season Gu Rains Hagaa Dry Season Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct June 9: Dekadal Rain Gauge Data (mm) Station Name DEKAD Boroma 2 Gulajeed n/a n/a n/a Wogooyi Galbeed Berbera n/a n/a n/a Hargeisa Burao 12 Odweyne n/a n/a n/a Sanaag Erigavo 7 5 Elafweyne n/a n/a n/a Caynabo Bossasso Garowe 1 Galkayo CeelBerde n/a n/a n/a Hudur n/a n/a n/a Baidoa n/a n/a n/a Dinsoor n/a n/a n/a Luuq 6 Middle Shabelle Jowhar 12 6 Lower Shabelle Afgoye Middle Juba Buale Lower Juba Jamame *n/a: Data not available Indian Ocean Hiran Indian Ocean Hiran May 9: Dekadal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 1st Dekad (1-1) 2nd Dekad (11-2) 3rd Dekad (21-3) 1st Dekad (1-1) June 9: Dekadal Rainfall Estimates (RFE) 2nd Dekad (11-2) 3rd Dekad (21-3) Indian Ocean

3 FSNAU Climate Data Update, June, 29 Long Term Trends Time Series Data used A g r i c u l t u r a l a r e a s : S P O T VEGETATION NDVI (from 1999) and RFE (from 1995). Pastoral areas: NOAA AVHRR NDVI (from 1982) and RFE (from 1995) The main reason for the choice of different NDVI time series is that the impact of the political crisis in Somalia was probably more disrupting for agriculture than for pastoralism, making it preferable to use a Post War LTA for agriculture. In addition SPOT VEGETATION data have a 1km resolution while NOAA AVHRR and RFE only 8km. An abnormal positive or negative deviation means that the current plant conditions differ significantly from the LTA. 1-daily Vegetation index deviations from LTA are shown as lines, while RFE seasonally cumulated deviations are shown as dots. The red horizontal lines represent approximately 1 standard deviation for the vegetation index and are used as refernce for a normal variation range, meaning that variations of the vegetation index above or below the red line can be considered truly exceptional. To facilitate the reading of these graphs, variations happening during the dry season have been masked out (equal to ) by using thresholds on the average vegetation index profiles. Each graph is accompanied by a map showing the administrative unit (region or district) and the land cover class it represents. The land cover data used are a combination of AFRICOVER data and SWALIM Land cover data (the latter being available only for the Shabelle and Juba riverine areas and for Galbeed). 3
