2 FOREWORD George Duncan Agri Solutions is a family run business established in June 2002 with six members of staff specialising in seeds, fertilisers and agricultural GPS. We have expanded and grown each year and in September 2010 we moved to a new purpose built facility at Kingsford Alford. We are delighted to bring to you our own seed range under the Kingsford banner; this is a major step for the company allowing us to formulate mixtures for all requirements using the very best grass and clover varieties approved by independent trials from all seed breeders. As a local seed merchant we pride ourselves in being able to meet all your seed, nutrient, chemical and soil sampling requirements. From left to right: James Hardie, Allan Grant, Mary Grant, Caroline Duncan, George Duncan and Eddie Gray With input costs increasing significantly notably fertiliser, fuel and feed the challenges that lie ahead have never been greater for producers. The need for self-sufficiency ensuring maximum yield from every acre is essential for all crops. As with all crops we would recommend soil sampling to ascertain the nutrient status of the soil allowing you to apply any fertiliser or lime that is required. The application of nutrients should ensure that your crops get off to the best possible start. The selection of seed variety for any crop is also important to maximise potential yield and our sales team will be happy to give advice if required.

4 KINGSFORD QUALITY MIXTURES Within you will find our range of mixtures designed specifically for the northern grass farmer. Our mixtures have been designed, developed and produced in Scotland by us therefore you can be confident that our Kingsford mixtures will perform for you. VARIETY SELECTION All Kingsford mixtures have been developed and designed from local and independent data derived from our experience and from the SAC grass levy scheme trials. This levy scheme is voluntary and invaluable for us to ensure that our customers have only the very best SAC 1st choice varieties included in their mixtures. We are pleased to support and contribute to the invaluable trial work of the SAC. SEED QUALITY Using the best varieties is only part of the story. The benefits of sowing the correct varieties can be negated by sowing poor quality seed. Our seed lots endure a meticulous selection process and are maintained to ensure that only seed lots of the highest germination, purity and vigour are used in our mixtures. 4 GEORGE DUNCAN AGRI SOLUTIONS LTD

16 USING AGRICULTURAL GPS The Latest Technology For Precision Farming: GPS Soil Sampling Soil Analysis Variable Rate Applications ph Phosphate and Potash Mapping Service Lancrop Laboratory Testing Using GPS Technology: George Duncan Agri Solutions uses GPS technology to accurately map the soil nutrient variations across your fields, enabling you to target variable fertiliser inputs. We provide GPS sampling, analysis and mapping to provide you with the detailed soil nutrient information you need, to make informed management decisions. By accurately identifying the variations in phosphorus, potassium and lime levels, you can: Reduce/ Target Fertiliser and/or lime expenditure Improve yield where nutrients or acidity are limiting factors Provide a nutrient management plan to justify fertiliser usage Full justification for application rates Precise record keeping Reduce environmental impact by eliminating application to areas with high nutrient status GPS FARMING: NUTRIENT MAPPING STEPS Step 1: An operator will map and sample your fields using GPS taking 9 core samples per acre. Step 2: Soil samples are independently analysed for P, K and ph. Step 3: Agri Solutions creates maps for each field, showing nutrient variations across the field. Step 4: Your Agri Solutions contact will help to evaluate the nutrient maps, showing you how to proceed in the most efficient way for your business. Step 5: Agri Solutions provide lime and fertiliser recommendations based on your cropping, soil type, straw remove decisions and target yields. 16 GEORGE DUNCAN AGRI SOLUTIONS LTD

17 Step 6: SOIL ANALYSIS Soil ph: Agri Solutions provide variable rate files for your GPS system. Mapping is recommended in each field every four or five years, to build up an accurate picture and take account of any deficiencies which may emerge. The number of samples taken in a given area, coupled with accurate position recording, is key to the success of the system. George Duncan Agri Solutions use Kubota RTV 900 s fitted with GPS technology to record the EXACT area of the field where soil samples are collected. Agri Solutions collect more samples per acre than any other operator, NINE cores per acre are taken and sent to an independent laboratory for detailed analysis. As each farm and each farmer is different application maps for Lime, Phosphate and Potash can be produced to suit your requirements for different rates and different products. George Duncan Agri Solutions will provide what is required by you. The ph of the soil, or more precisely the ph of the soil solution is very important because soil solution carries in it nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potash that plants need in specific amounts to grow, thrive and fight off diseases. If the ph of the soil is increased above 5.5 Nitrogen is made available to plants. Phosphorus is available to plants when the soil ph is between Certain bacteria help plants obtain N by converting atmospheric Nitrogen into a form of N that plants can use. These bacteria live in root nodules of legumes like clover or peas and function best when the ph of the soil they live in is within an acceptable range. Nitrogen: Plants absorb Nitrogen from the soil. As nitrification is so prevalent in agricultural farmed soil most of the Nitrogen is taken up as nitrate. Nitrate moves freely throughout the soil gravitating towards plant roots as they absorb water. Because plants require very large amounts of N an extensive root system is essential to allow maximum uptake. This is where Phosphate comes in. Phosphate is very important for root development. Most plants take up N from the soil continually throughout their lives, and as the plants increase in size so the N requirement increases. A plant supplied with adequate N grows rapidly with fresh green foliage. Plants with pale colouring and stunted growth are showing signs of N deficiency. Nitrogen is available in farm yard manure with 0.65 units available per tonne of FYM on average. Phosphate: Adequate Phosphate results in rapid growth and early maturity. It is readily translocated within the plant moving from older to younger tissue as the plants form cells and develop roots, stems and leaves. A good supply of P is associated with increased root growth which means the roots can explore more soil and utilise more nutrients. Without adequate Phosphate the plant will have very poor root growth and under developed stems and leaves. Phosphate is available in farmyard manure with 0.35 units available per tonne of FYM on average. Potash: Potash is particularly important for plant stem extension and root development. This will help with drought tolerance and will considerably reduce lodging, all important for crops. Potash reduces water loss and wilting, it builds cellulose and aids photosynthesis. Potash is available in farm yard manure with 0.8 units available per tonne of FYM on average. GEORGE DUNCAN AGRI SOLUTIONS LTD 17
