1 Precision Agricultural Adaptation in EU Fields marked with * are mandatory. Is technology the way to improve farming? You probably have heard about Precision Agriculture, but are you already using or do you intend to use Precision Agriculture Technologies (PAT)? We would like to learn for all farmers in the EU about their relation to PAT. We want to hear from you! The participation in this survey supports to fill the data and knowledge gaps on the use of PAT at European level, as well as to form an understanding of the application of agricultural technologies and of farmers and agro-cooperatives needs. Survey results will contribute to the ongoing discussion on how policy and stakeholders (including farmers associations) can support the uptake and effective use of PAT, e.g. how to close an implementation gap (due to e.g. connectivity and interoperability issues). We need your help to get a good understanding of the real use of precision agriculture. Please take 5 minutes and fill out the online questionnaire. Thank you very much in advance! 15 * 7 Are you aware of policies related to data privacy and security in data sharing? Yes, this will protect me from mis-use of data Yes, but I expect this will not protect me from mis-use. No, I am not aware of those policies I don t know Benefits * 1 How does precision agriculture in general contribute to your farm operations? Precision agriculture contains many aspects and serves many purposes. Please, indicate what precision agriculture means to you and how it contributes to your farm operations. Please select the option that best describes your situation. The use of simple techniques (such as GPS, feed concentrate dispenser etc) makes me more efficient Data collection and documentation provides me with more insights in my farm performance Collection of data (including via GPS and sensors) and decision support via smart software helps me making better decisions It creates new ways of farm management and changes my work on the farm I do not know Other * 2 Other, namely: 3 And how do the technique(s) that you apply, contribute to your daily work? You may tick off more than one, maximum 3 answers, rank them in order of importance ("1"= "most important") between 1 and 3 answered rows Helps improving my yields Helps reducing input like fuel, fertiliser, crop protection agent etc. Saves time Provides better insight into soil and crop conditions Provides better insight in my daily performance Provides better data for my supply chain partners, and a better market position for me Reduces administrative burden Enlarges the working day, as it reduces fatigue Enlarges the working day as it allows working at dusk and dawn (and night) Improves my accuracy 15

16 Enhances new cultivation practices (e.g. mechanical weeding, cross-sowing) Other * 4 Other, namely: Adoption 1 Who or what did influence your decision to use precision agriculture / precision livestock farming? (pick one option per row) Strong Influence Some effect No effect * Local farm advisor or extension agent * Industry salesperson or machinery dealer * Input-supplier * Other farmers * Co-operative * Machinery collective/machinery ring * Contractor * Visit to a trade fair * Researchers * College/University open days * Farmer's Union * Public funding opportunities 2 Could you indicate what incentives would encourage you to use/increase your use and adoption of precision agriculture technology? (pick one option per row) This would most definitely increase my use of precision agriculture This would most probably increase my use of precision agriculture This would have no effect on my decision * More support for training (myself, my family, my staff) 16

17 * Training on data analysis * Confidence that yields would increase * Confidence that my quality would increase * Confidence that my costs would reduce * More technical support from sales people * Directed subsidy support to modernise or replace machinery * Financial support from tax breaks * A 10% reduction in the present cost of the technology * Government support for soil mapping, by providing ground penetrating radar or intensive soil sampling * Improving technology to provide task maps based on soil maps * Better internet connectivity / broadband access * Evidence-based information of impacts * Guarantee on data protection Reasons for not using Precision Agriculture Technologies (PAT) 1 Why have on your farm no PAT been used so far?/ What prevents you from using PAT? You may tick off more than one, maximum 3 answers; rank them for importance ("1" = "most important") between 1 and 3 answered rows I am not aware of the existence of these technologies The return on investment takes too long I do not see the benefit of these technologies My farm is too small There are no contractors/dealers/companies offering such services in my region 17

18 I do not think it will pay off I find it too difficult to work with I am not interested in precision agriculture techniques I have not yet looked at the usefulness and economic aspects I do not have the right knowledge to work with My current machine park is insufficiently equipped for the technology I miss good management tools that translate field situation into applications (seeds, fertiliser, water, crop protection) I have considered it, but eventually let go of the idea I wait for the technology to develop and become cheaper I don t know Other * 2 Other, namely: Thank you very much for filling out this questionnaire. It helps the (European farmers association Copa- Cogeca, the European network of national agricultural machinery associations CEMA, the European Commission services DG AGRI, Joint Research Centre and Eurostat and the European Environment Agency) in understanding your potential use of technology. By increasing the knowledge around Precision Agricultural Techniques, contribute to better policy-making and strategy formation. The results of the survey will be made public via the websites and mailing lists of the organisers. Thank you very much! 18
