2 Three keywords for READY MED FISH The acronym Requalification of Employment and Diversification for Youth in the Mediterranean Fisheries sector Requalification Diversification Mediterranean Support and train young operators in order to renew the appeal of the sector and strengthen the sources of income Work for the development of diversification providing support both on the technical and normative aspects

3 Why READY Med Fish? A generalized social and economic crisis involving small-scale fisheries is spreading throughoutthe Mediterranean sea basin Loss of income at household level Loss of interest in investing in the sector No generational turnover Loss of social value within coastal communities Increase of unsustainable practices Loss of cultural heritage Need to directly support the operators and review policies and strategies at Mediterranean level

5 What does multi-functionality mean? Consider the potentiality of the territory Enhance the socioeconomic condition of the household and of the whole community Multi-functionality refers to the capacity of fishermen to provide useful services other than the one strictly related to primary production. Identify new economic activities to undertake Invest in know-how, requilify and diversify the primary production with a new integrative activity Diversifing should never mean abandoning fisheries

6 How do we support the path towards diversification? 2. TRAINING for young operators, fisheries associations and public administrations 3. Review of the Mediterranean, national and local normative on fisheries and diversification 1. Geographic and economic identification of local needs and constraints 4. Establishment of a network of Info and Assistance desks, and a Virtual Platform In order to overcome all the economic, social, technical and normative constraints that are currently preventing a full development and spread of the concept of multi-functionality READY MED FISH has worked on 4 main pillars

7 READY MED FISH OBJECTIVES Identification Training Normative Networking Specific Objectives Strengthen the professionalization of young operators of the small-scale fisheries sector Improve normative capacities of Public Administrations on diversification Increase the legal and technical knowledge of Fisheries Associations Foster the review and reform of the normative framework at local, and national level Promote the private entrepreneurship and increase potential revenues

Identification Identification of local needs and territorial peculiarities in terms of diversification Step 2: Definition of the professional profiles according to target areas needs (youths involved in this phase). Step 3: Adapting professional profiles to the geographic, economic and social context. Establishment of the GEOGRAPHIC ACTION GROUPS (GAGs)

Training Class and on the job training aimed at three main target groups to enhance the local capacities on multi-functionality and diversification Public Administrations 20 represenatives trained Training on the normative aspects related to management and regulation of diversification activities. In Apulia. Fisheries Associations 20 representatives trained Training focused both on normative and techincal aspects concerning diversification. The main aim was to allow an effective spread of such knowledge in the target areas and among coastal communities, boosting the development of an entrepreneurial approach among young fishermen. In Apulia Young fishermen 80 operators trained (20 per country - on the job training, best practices, success stories)

10 Project strategy and results 3. Normative Review of the national legislative frameworks and elaboration of normative proposals at local, regional and national level. 4. Networking - Promotion of the diversification path as a successful integrative activity through the institution of a network of Info and Assistance Desks (IADs) active in the PAs of the countries involved in the project, to give support to fisheries operators after the conclusion of the project. (Technical, normative, administrative and business support, for starting up new activities). - Creation of a virtual platform to promote diversification, support start-ups and connect all the active IADs online.
