Realtive weights genetic progress Relative weights do not necessarily reflect relative genetic progress in all traits because traits are genetically not independent selection for one trait may cause positive/negative changes in other traits (indirect selection response) Longevity SCS Fertility mat. CE Genetic correlations RZN RZS RZR RZKm Milk production index (RZM) ±0.00 Longevity (RZN) Udder health/scs (RZS) ±0.05 Daughter fertility (RZR) Daugh. calving ability (RZKm) Milk production traits have negative correlations to most functional traits Most functional traits have positive correlations among each other 3. 11 Selection in practice If farmers (breeding organizations) select not the same as official TMI genetic progress in cow population remains theory Omajo (O-Man x Major) RZG 139 (#8 Dec. 2010) RZM 134 RZE 100 RZS 118 RZN 112 RZR 109 Total # offspring: 543 Braveheart (Marshall x Luke) RZG 116 (#>500 Dec. 2010) RZM 98 RZE 137 RZS 108 RZN 113 RZR 98 Total # offspring: 45, März 2017 Seite 11

Selection in DEU practice ᴓ EBV all used semen straws Holstein bulls (2016 until August) new RZG Genomics Something happened 2001/2002 and 2010/2011 with the used bulls 2002: negative genetic trend fertility suddenly stopped, longevity first time positive 2011: first time positive trend fertility, doubled genetic progress RZG Page 12

Selection in DEU practice ᴓ EBV all used semen straws Holstein bulls (2016 until August) new RZG Genomics Progress/year RZM 1,5 3,3 RZE 1,6 3,4 RZS 0,4 1,6 RZN 0,8 2,7 RZR -0,5 1,6 RZG 1,9 5,1 DEU bull from DNK Since genomics progress in all traits with RZG And more than doubled progress in RZG Progress conformation higher than expected by weight RZG Fantastic (Famous x Massey) RZG 160 (#6 Dec. 2016) RZM 152 RZE 117 RZS 126 RZN 125 RZR 100 Page 13

TMI: Theory versus acceptance/image TMI and all single traits on one neutral relative base = easy to compare but farmers experience is on kg, days, %, Many traits with low weight = correct as long as some economic impact but farmers often feel different (e.g. bull with low milking speed in top-10) because economic impact of many traits is not linear 3. 15 TMI: Selection in times of genomics How reliable are gebv for exclusively national traits (small reference)? farmers are sensitive for bulls dropping Effective pre-selection of male candidates by genomic parent average Top-100 Viking bulls by gntm For exclusive domestic traits this is only possible in own population more difficult to select in foreign populations Top-100 HOL gen. 16 Selection on NTM or RZG: different results? NTM and RZG are implemented since a long time with significant differences there should be remarkable differences how the population developed but how to find out? SNP exchange of all young bulls among EuroGenomics countries independent gebv from national evaluations (not converted) foreign and domestic bulls are fully comparable 3. März 2017 Seite 16

Summary NTM and RZG have significant different composition Production functionality: NTM=1:2, RZG=1:0.9 Within NTM functionality many exclusive domestic traits ( 15% of NTM) With RZG being more similar to TMI in other main Holstein countries than NTM Differences in TMI/breeding philosophy have resulted in genetic differentiation of Holstein (bull) populations: DFS higher Fertility Calving Udder health (Longevity) (Fat) DFS lower Milk Frame Udder (Feed&Legs) Bull selection is more focused on national population in DFS Probably because of different traits/goal and selection base for this 3.
