1 EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF AGRI-SC AND AGRISPON ON CORN AT WATERLOO IOWA IN 1990 Submitted to: Mr. Wally Leman, Four Star Ag Services P.O. Box 463, Bluffton, IN Tel: (800) Fax: (219) Submitted by: ACRES P.O. Box 249 Cedar Falls, Iowa Te1: (319) Fax: (319) ACRES Project Code: 90681A Summary Comments Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Agri-SC and Agrispon on corn yield and yield components at Waterloo, Iowa in Materials and Methods A randomized complete block design with four replications was used in this study. Plots consisted of four rows 40 feet long with a 3-inch row spacing. On May 18 two soil samples were collected from the study area. and sent to A & L lab for soil characterization. Dual at 2 pts/a and Bladex at 2.4 lbs/a were broadcasted on May 24 and then incorporated. Six fertility programs were used in this study (Table 1). The combination of Agri-SC, Agrispon and two rates of nitrogen (40 and 120 lbs per acre) made up the six treatments. Agri-SC and Agrispon were applied separately to the appropriate plots on May 22 using a six-nozzle shielded boom mounted on a John Deere 317 lawn tractor. Agri-SC was applied at a rate of 4 lbs per acre whereas Agrispon was applied at a rate of 0.11 gal/acre (1 liter/hectare). Nitrogen was applied on May 24 to all plots at a rate of 40 lbs/a. In addition, treatments 5 and 6 received an additional 80 lbs/a of nitrogen on May 24. Pioneer 3475 corn was planted on May 31 using a six-row maxemerge planter at a planting rate of 30,200 seeds/acre. The application of Agrispon at silking was made on August 2 using a backpack sprayer with a six-nozzle boom. The application rate was 0.11 gal/acre (1 liter/hectare). Leaf area per plot was determined using five ear-leaves per plot. Leaves were collected on August 20. R 59 10/20/97

2 Plant population per plot was counted on October 9 including all plants in every plot. The number of ears per plot were counted at harvest on October 25. After harvest the number of kernels per ear using two average ears and kernel weight using 100 kernels were assessed. Results and Discussion Grain yield ranged from to bu/a. The control had the lowest yield whereas the Agrispon + 40 lbs of nitrogen and Agrispon lbs of nitrogen had the first and second highest yields, respectively (Table 2). The analysis of variance shown in Table 3 indicates that there were no significant differences among the six fertility programs for grain yield. Moisture content ranged from 13.9 to 15.1% (Table 2) with no significant difference among the fertility programs as shown by the analysis of variance in Table 4. Leaf area ranged from 3291 to 3661 cm 2 for five ear leaves per plot (Table 3). There were significant differences for leaf area among treatments as shown in the analysis of variance in Table 6. However, it appears that leaf area increased with the addition of nitrogen. The increase ranged from 3 to 6%. Agrispon treated plots had an increased leaf area of 2% (treatments 1 versus 3) over the control plots at the first rate of nitrogen. Agri-SC did not affect leaf area in the three fertility programs where it was used. There were no significant differences among treatments for the number of plants per plots (Table 7), the number of ears per plot (Table 8), the number of kernels per ear (Table 9) and kernel weight (Table 10).
