8 Biodiversity & ecosystem services science for a sustainable planet Challenge 1: Identify urgent detrimental changes in biodiversity & ecosystem services and provide the knowledge to avoid, limit or mitigate such changes Challenge 2: Enhance the capacity of socio-ecological systems to support biodiversity & ecosystem services under global change Challenge 3: Develop the knowledge base on the use and conservation of biodiversity to sustain ecosystem services and human well-being

9 Outline Science Core Projects, Cross-Cutting Networks New DIVERSITAS Strategic plan Assessment IPBES: new assessment platform Observations GEO BON: Global Observing System for Biodiversity Policy CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity)

10 IPBES Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPCC-like mechanism for biodiversity and ecosystem services The scientific community plays a major role in all aspects of the process: DIVERSITAS has been the main actor Process started in Jan 05 and UN General Assembly agreed to establish IPBES in Dec 10 Plenary: 2 sessions 2-7 Oct 2010 and April 2012 Define procedure, programme of work, secretariat ICSU leads the scientific community in the Scie & Techno Major Group for CSD & UNEP DIVERSITAS represents ICSU in IPBES (in strong collaboration with IHDP)
