2 P A G E 2 The 14 th Japan Goat Summit Use of goats in suburban area A Japanese organization of the Japan Goat Network (JGN) was established in 1999 among researchers, producers, and goat lovers to share information and promote the Japanese goat industry. The JGN holds annual meetings (the Japan Goat Summit), publishes a biannual journal named Japan Goat Journal or Yagi no tomo in Japanese (means friends of goats ), and has been communicating with members through the website< Japanese agriculture has been developed towards modernization and globalization, whereas the interest of Slow Food and environmental protection is steadily expanding among consumers in recent years. From this point of view, people are now reviewing existing agricultural systems and life in farming villages. There are some ongoing projects of grazing goats in suburbs or villages to re-utilize abandoned cropping areas and un-utilized land. Those areas would also provide recreation and communication opportunities to people through close interactions with goats. This year our featured speakers were Dr. In-Jen Pan and Dr. Cheon Ho Kim. Dr. In-Jen Pan, DVM., is the President of the Asian Partnership for Goat Affairs (APGA) and several prestigious positions in Taiwan, Japan, and China. He had also been a professor of Nihon University. He presented Why Goat? as national defense issues concerning the past FMD case in cattle. Dr. Cheon Ho Kim, professor of Collage of Veterinary Medicine, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Korea, presented Dairy Goat Production and its Characteristics in Korea. In the afternoon, case reports included were Effects of goat tethering in deserted cultivated land, Distribution and circulation of radioactive materials in year-round grazing goats, Use of goat meat and milk in Mongolia Ulaanbaatar suburbs, Practice of natural environment educational programs using goat, and Role of goat connecting the environment and society. The afternoon session was facilitated by Mr. Imai, President of the JGN, with active discussions between speakers and participants. Several interesting topics addressed were odor elimination of goat milk, prices of goat semen, year-round breeding techniques, characteristics of Nubian goats, profitability of goat production, etc. A social was held at the Ashigara Ikoi Mura where participants enjoyed delicious local dishes and smoked goat meat made by Professor Sakata of Azabu University. Attendees also spent a nice time visiting goat tethering sites and a local farmers market in the following day. JGN head office

3 P A G E 3 The 14th Meeting of Japanese Society of Goat Science The Japanese Society of Goat Science established in March, The 14th biannual meeting of the society was held at Yasuda Women s University on March 27, The program included a scientific lecture, 7 research presentations, and a case study. We are glad that many oral presentations were made by graduate students and that this meeting and Society offer young scientists opportunities to present their research findings. During the meeting, there were in depth discussions on each of the topics, with input of both researchers and producers. The program is shown below. 4 P A G E 4 Still 310,000 evacuees The Great East Japan Earthquake Two years have passed since the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on March 11, The most powerful earthquake and worst postwar natural disaster affected the Pacific coast of Japan (mainly Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima prefectures) and resulted in 16,000 deaths and 2,700 missing.
