1 COOPERATIVE EXTENSION University of California Yolo, Solano & Sacramento Counties South Sacramento Valley Field Crops Report Kent L. Brittan, Agronomic Crops Farm Advisor 70 Cottonwood Street, Woodland, CA OFFICE (530) FAX (530) September 2006 Vol. 1 No. 1 In This Issue: P Wheat Variety Trial Results P Barley Trial Results P -Southern Sacramento Valley Small Grains Meeting-Sept 20 th Conservation Tillage Meeting in Firebaugh, CA Oct. 19 th 2006 Wheat Variety Trial Results Good news for the wheat industry has been slow in coming and I m glad to be able to pass a little along. It looks like we are going to have good prices for our high quality wheat this next season and we have two new stripe rust resistant varieties becoming available. Unfortunately, there is a very limited amount of seed of these two new varieties with most for seed production. Topping my variety trial, see Table 1, for the hard red wheat s was the new Expresso. It has very good stripe rust (SR) resistance along with some apparent septoria leaf blotch resistance. I m excited to get a variety that has Septoria resistance as we have been building up the disease in the soils with the current varieties we are now using. Expresso is the old high quality Express variety with new SR resistance genes and apparently is a higher yielding selection. This variety has always had the some of the most consistently high protein levels of any variety I ve worked with. Bushel Weight s (BuWt) are good at 63.2 lbs/bu. I say this cautiously as I ve only had it in my trials one season. Seed is handled by Adams Grain of Woodland, CA. Resource Seeds International s (RSI) new variety is Cal Rojo this was in last year s trial. Yields and protein are the same as Blanca Grande and similar to Summit before SR. BuWt s are average to a bit lower for the hard wheat s. Cal Rojo seems to have a high susceptibility to Septoria like both Blanca Grande and Summit. Seed is available through Farmers Grain in Sacramento Valley and Penny Newman in the San Joaquin Valley. There are three other hard red wheat varieties available with good SR resistance UC1419, Dash 12 and Solano. Under ideal conditions Dash 12 yielded better than any other hard wheat variety however protein hovered around 11% and it has a tendency to lodge. Solano is only a moderate yielder with good bushel weights and protein around 11.6%. Both are available from Adams Grain. UC1419 is a good yielder and has proteins usually above 12%, but there is no commercial seed available. For detailed information about the varieties, disease susceptibility, fungicide applications and much, much more come to the: Southern Sacramento Valley Small Grains Meeting this next Wednesday, September, 20 th 8AM Norton Hall UC Cooperative Extension Offices, Woodland, CA

New varieties Current standard 2006 Wheat Fungicide Trials Jerry Schmierer, Doug Munier and Kent Brittan This year we looked at 4 different commercial fungicides on Summit wheat with different application rates and timings in 3 locations located in the Sacramento Valley. All four materials: Headline, Quadris, Quilt and Stratego gave good control when applied in a timely manner compared to an untreated control. For single applications Headline, at either 6.0 or 9.0 oz, and Stratego, at 10 oz, gave marginally better yields for the early application, Feeks 8 (early boot). Feeks 8 v.s. Feeks 10.5 (flowering) gave slightly better results. The best results were obtained from split applications of Quadris or Stratego at the lower rates of 4 oz and 8 oz respectively. Jerry also tried a split app of Stratego and Quadris at these low rates with the same timings of Feeks 8 and Feeks 10.5 with slightly better results. We did not try Headline, but would expect it to work as well. So it looks like low rate split applications would save us money on product and spread out the control, but cost additional on application. An additional worry might be increasing the chance of resistance developing in stripe rust; this is a hotly debated issue at this time.

4 2006 Barley Variety Trial Results Like many growers this past season I planted two barley trials and lost one due to flooding, several feet for a couple of months. So I have only one location to share with you this season and that is a trial in Brooks, CA across Highway 16 from the Cache Creek Casino. Consistently over the past 3 years of trials UC1047 has out yielded and had better disease resistance than any of the other varieties. This year s rainfed barley trial was on Yolo Silt Loam soil planted into clods without adequate fertilizer at the start. Stands were a bit low and there was some weed pressure so yields are a bit low. This is my first experience with UC1134, a naked barley for the organic market, which looked very go with no shatter. There is some commercial seed available of both the UC1047 and the UC1134 (organic), please contact me for information.
