Strengthening Quality Control Systems: Proficiency test results 88

Strengthening Quality Control Systems! FAO Network of Experts to Strengthen Quality Control Systems in Feed Analysis Laboratory Approx. 50 experts 2-3 queries per week

84 participant labs 40 countries Strengthening Quality Control Systems! A Joint FAO-TAMU Proficiency Test for Aflatoxin in Feeds This year 84 participant labs 40 countries

Strengthening Quality Control Systems Laboratory Internal Audit Tool for Testing Laboratories compliant with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 Allows determination of strengths and gaps in laboratory functionality Allows generation of a laboratory profile or map Can be adapted to demonstrate functionality and capacity status at the national, regional and global levels Allows to establish a baseline for laboratory status prior to an intervention Progress and impact can be measured against this baseline during and after the intervention Facilitate in-person and remote 3 rd party auditing of systems and procedures in feed analysis laboratories

Use of NIRS: es/ma/on of chemical composi/on & nutri/ve value Importance of wet chemistry Development of calibrapon equapons Training workshops Colombia Senegal (No. of participants:50) Biomass Days after planting? 17 ILRI s NIRS Hubs " ILRI staponary NIRS instruments in hubs in South Asia, East Africa and West Africa link public (CG, NARES) and private players (seed industry, feed industry) for quick and inexpensive phenotyping for fodder quality traits " NIRS equapons available for a range of convenponal traits (N, NDF, ADF, ADL, IVOMD, ME, Fat, Sugar etc) " Extension of NIRS equapon to amino acids, faxy acids, ANF to support whole plant oppmizapon breeding (food + feed + fodder) " ExploraPon of mobile NIRS technology Non-evasive, ca 200 samples/d, >30 traits NIRS equations sharable across compatible instruments

Lysine PredicPon by NIRS Training imparted to: 120 researchers from approx. 20 countries For further informa.on: KVSV Prasad,

Capacity building around feed safety in ILRI Project activities: On farm surveys of feed and milk to collect samples and information on feeding practices and feed sources Methods for mitigation of aflatoxin in feed Laboratory diagnostics to match feed contamination levels with aflatoxin in milk Capacity building: Senegal: Project on aflatoxins in feed and milk with one master student Kenya: Projects in the dairy value chain on milk and feed with 2 PhD students, 1 master student, 1 intern, 1 post doc Kenya: Chicken feed: 1 PhD student Kenya: Two trainings for farmers on aflatoxins and good agricultural practices for 682 male farmers and 653 female farmers Ethiopia: Aflatoxin extent and detection in milk and feed with 1 post doc and four attachment associates working on detection using ELISA Team: Delia Grace, Johanna Lindahl, Jean Hanson For further informa.on: j.lindahl@cgiar.org

Some thoughts The needs is to: Inculcate culture of generating sound data needs amongst all players in the feed production, formulation and use chain. Engage all staff in developing an ethos that promote production and use of quality and safe feed. Integrate the activities of feed analysis laboratories into public policies on livestock production, environment, food safety and quality, and animal welfare.
