3 1. What was developed because workers were in short supply during the colonial era? Tools to help make labor easier.

4 2. What was the Industrial Revolution? British inventors created machinery to perform some of the work involved in cloth making. These machines ran on water power. Mills were popping up on Rivers. People left their homes and farms and went to work in cities at mills.

5 3. Why did the Industrial Revolution spread to New England first? Land there was bad for farming. People were willing to leave their farms to earn wages in Mills. Also had many rivers and streams.

6 4. Why was New England a good place for the Industrial Revolution? Close to resources like coal and iron from Pennsylvania. Had many ports.

7 5. Define Capitalism- Under Capitalism people put their capital, or money, into a business in hopes of making a profit. Allows competition to flourish with a minimum of Gov t interference.

8 6. Define Free Enterprise- People are free to buy, sell, and produce whatever they want. Work wherever they wish. Promotes competition, profit, private property and economic freedom.

10 7. What were some inventions in the cloth making field? Spinning Jenny Water Frame Power Loom Most needed water power. Eventually ran on Steam Engine.

11 8. Who invented the Cotton Gin? What did it do? Eli Whitney Removed seeds from cotton fiber. 1 worker could clean as fast as 50.

12 9. What is a patent? A patent gives an inventor the sole legal right to the invention and its profits for a certain period of time.

13 10. What did Francis Cabot Lowell open in 1814? How was it unique? A textile (cloth) mill in Massachusetts. All the stages of cloth making were performed under one roof. Launched the Factory system, all manufacturing steps in one area to increase efficiency.

14 11. Define Interchangeable Parts- Identical machine parts that could be quickly put together to make a complete product.

15 12. What did Interchangeable parts open the door for? Producing goods on a mass scale and reducing the price of the goods.

16 13. What percentage of Americans were farmers by 1820? 65% of Americans were farmers.

17 14. What was the difference between Northern farms and Southern Farms? Northern farms Subsistence Farming. Southern farms Cash Crops.

20 16. What did the rise of corporations make it easier to do? Buy and sell stock. Shares of ownership in a company.

21 17. What powers did the Second Bank of the United States have? Had the power to make large loans to businesses.

22 18. How did some people feel about the National Bank? Many who believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution opposed the bank.

23 19. Where did many factories develop? Many developed along rivers and streams to take advantage of the water power.

24 20. What developed in many cities? Disease. In Philly for example a yellow fever epidemic broke out and thousands died.
