Rain water Harvesting and recycling of supplemental irrigation Before intervention: No any water storage tank or rainwater harvesting structures were constructed in village. Project interventions: Construction of 10 low cost MLCL (Multi layered cross linked) polyethylene based water tank. Source of water harvesting

5 Significant interventions Construction of Low cost water harvesting structures for cultivation of off season vegetables under rain-fed conditions for higher monetary return 10 Multi layered cross linked Silpaulin based tanks have been developed at farmer s field, with a total capacity of about 120 m 3. Demonstrations on HYV of off season vegetables crops like cabbage, cauliflower in rabi season, French bean and summer squash in jayad while tomato, capsicum, brinjal and okra in kharif season carried out at 10 farmers field. Significant increase (from 1.1 Nali (220m 2 ) to 7.3 Nali (1460m 2 ) during rabi season) in area under off season vegetable cultivation was observed. Cultivation of off season vegetables utilizing the water harvested and collected in these poly-tanks resulted in net return of Rs 3500 to 4,000 per year by each farmer.

7 Module -1 Natural Resource Management 3. Plantation of subtropical fruit crops Project interventions: Plantation of subtropical fruit crops like Lime, Lemon, Pomegranate, Guava. These plants survive in dry condition and required less irrigation

9 Significant interventions The drought tolerant Pigeon pea (Arhar) variety V L Arhar -1 was promoted in the Dunda village during Kharif 2011 and Kharif 2012 Pigeon pea crop improves the soil characteristic and fertility status ensuring better growth to succeeding crop It has wide options for mixed cropping and can also be grown as Arhar+ groundnut/ soybean/ mung / urd etc. The farmers who are cultivating V L Arhar -1 promised to retain the harvest and share it with their fellow farmers as seed material. The farmers have realized its benefits and sown their keen interest in Arhar cultivation. As such area under Arhar Var. VL Arhar-1 increased to 4.0 ha. (48.14%) during Kharif 2012.

14 Significant interventions Backyard poultry production in drought areas- An alternative source of income 20 interested farmers were selected for backyard poultry farming. These farmers are rearing poultry birds successfully and getting good quality meat/protein and eggs regularly. Around quality eggs have already been produced by the owners and earned supplementary income of Rs 90000/- by selling Rs 5-6/egg. 23 other farmers got inspired and have started rearing of this newly introduced kroiler birds with their own investment. This technology is becoming popular among the farmers and has proved to be a good option for subsidiary income with quality protein.

21 Major constraints faced in implementation of NICRA and proposed solutions. Long dry spell hindered growing of crops to achieve full yield potential Documentation of activities with action photograph is affected due to non availability of camera (Fund required) Some fund under non recurring head can be made available for office. All proposed programmes as per schedule could not be executed due to lack of approved action plan along with fund allocation details for each identified activity. 12/11/2012

22 Major lessons learned Drought tolerant pigeon pea variety (VL Arhar 1) has increased the farmer s income as compared to other Kharif crops. Construction of low cost water harvesting structures (LDPE tanks) has provided opportunity to grow off season vegetables. Backyard poultry production in drought area has proved good alternative source of income. 12/11/2012
