3 1. Executive summary. The New Kaloko Nutrition garden and poultry project operated in addressing nutritional problems experienced by malnourished children and people living with HIV/AIDS. The project involves 40 members, mainly women with only 6 men. The project endeavored to address nutritional problems through improvement of the nutritional garden and commencement of poultry. The produce went towards feeding of the malnourished children and sale of extras. Being located in a dry area the project provided for a borehole to adequately water the garden even out of rain season and during water supply shortages. Skills were imparted in the participating members so as to help them even after the expiry of the pilot. The manure from the poultry was used in the garden as cheap source of fertilization. 2. Implementing organizations The Ndola Nutrition Group is the lead implementing agent on behalf of the core team for the urban agriculture programme. It has been responsible in the management of the project on behalf of the core team. They have been mobilizing the members to participate on the project and giving them confidence to manage themselves on day to day basis. Partners include Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, District Health Management Team, Ndola city council, Community development and Social welfare. The Ministry of Agriculture has been providing trainings in the various crop growing, organic farming, poultry production and group managent. The Ndola city council has been providing technical support to the project as well as being the overall coordinator of the project. The community development and social welfare has been involved in the mobilization of the community together with Ndola nutrition group. 3. Outputs and results achieved The project managed to train the participating members in various agricultural enterprises and establishment of a poultry. A borehole has been sunk and is operational. The size of the garden has increased hence more production. Produce from the poultry has provided animal proteins which never use to be available previously.

4 The increased production in the garden has increased the amounts of food being fed to the children. The variety of nutritious food stuffs has increased in the nutrition garden. The standards of the garden maintenance are much higher than before. There has been an attraction of some more participants, implying the project is becoming popular. Impacts of the project are showing in the enthusiasm with which the members are participating, however, results of increased income in the households is still minimal. Variety of nutritious food stuffs has been noted in community since the inception of the pilot project. Access to clean water has improved with the provision of the borehole. 4. Explications The project suffered some setbacks during the sinking of the borehole. The initial estimate was that water would be struck at 50 m, however, the case was different. Water was struck at 80m which made it difficult to go ahead with the use of a hand pump, electing for a submersible pump. This took some bit of time as we waited for additional funds. The project was also affected by the delay in the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the implementing organization and the District Health Management Team. The cooperation exhibited amongst the stakeholders contributed to the quick implementation of the project One of the key issues that needed to be addressed by the city was the issue of water. Water has been a very serious problem for urban agriculture. The provision of water for Kaloko pilot went to address the concerns of water for urban agriculture. Impact monitoring was done by the team from the Copperbelt University and progresss was also monitored by the core team on monthly basis. The participating organizations are now sensitive to gender. Assigning of officers to carry out activities of the project has been gender balanced. Both men and women have been participating. 5. Sustainability and replicability The participants in the project have households whose members need to feed and equally have resources for buying other things. The knowledge gained from the trainings is being applied on their individual plots. The low input by use of manure in the garden makes it more affordable and less likely to discourage the participants from continuing with the programme. There is need to increase the number of trainees in the area so as to have more people knowledgeable.

5 The issue of water still remains outstanding. Only those close to the borehole will have it easy to irrigate their gardens since the KALOKO area is a dry place. Placement of of more boreholes would be more ideal No up scaling yet has taken place for the project. It has been too soon to get results that would be interpreted as rated as successful 6.
