3 i MESSAGE The outputs of plant breeding are new and or improved crop varieties. The desire of plant breeders is to develop varieties that will meet the demand of the farmers and consumers. In particular, farmers need varieties that are high yielding, resistant to biotic and nonbiotic stresses. The consumers on the other hand are more concerned with the taste, nutrition, and some and aesthetic values of farm produce. The crops varietal improvement groups of the National Seed Industry Council are tasked to conduct the evaluation of these varieties through the National Cooperative Trials. The trials, more often than not are conducted nationwide. The parameters of evaluation include varietal characteristics, agro-climatic and seasonal adaptation. The National Seed Industry Council is mandated to register and accredit new varieties of high and superior qualities and ensures to be made available to our farmers and cooperators. This is as provided for under the Republic Act 7308 otherwise known as the Seed Industry Development Act of Through the initiative of the Council, this 2010 Seed Catalogue is made and completed which contains the varietal description and other information of these new varieties.
