Restoration of Rice Paddies and Biodiversity ~after the March 2011 tsunami in the Great East Japan~ Shigeki Iwabuchi NPO Rice Paddies Network Japan

Damaged rice paddies field

Damaged fishers port

How shall we rebuild damaged societies? Rebuild huge levees at huge cost? Spray chemicals to desalinate the rice paddies hit by tsunami? Raze forests to build residential area on higher ground to avoid tsunami? Care to the surrounding ecosystem is necessary not to damage ecosystem services but to build sustainable societies.

Value of sustainability Time is Key index of Sustainable Use Value of Sustainability Time Money Ecology Value of Ecology

Managing Value of sustainability User-recovers principle(urp) Natural Capital User require to eliminate their ecological debt. Ecological Deficit Depreciation / Year Pay for ES Resilience of Nature Stock Ecological Debt (Waiting Time for Recovery) SWAP Invest Natural Capital Account(Government, Buisiness, Project, )

22nd May 2011 We appeal that ecosystem services through the connectivity between ocean, forest, rice paddies and human well-beings are essential for rebuilding.

Soil Microbial

The biodiversity and vitality value of soil can be quantitatively evaluated Over 1 triliion bacteria are found in 1 gram of soil. Microbial diversity is indirectly evaluated by scoring how many of 95 organic substances are decomposed. Analysis with 15 min intervals for 48 hrs allows to estimate vitality value of soil.

To measure the index, soil suspension tested is injected in 96 small walls on a plastic panel, having 95 different kinds of carbon sources. Degradation reaction of each carbon source is observed as coloring reaction in each carbon source 192 times for 48 hours.
