1 Adilabad District Profile: Adilabad is spread over an area of 16,20,000 ha with nearly 45% of the area under forests. While gross cropped area is 5,40,000 ha, the net sown area is 34.8% of the total geographical area. The district has a cropping intensity of 101%, the least among the NAIP districts. Only 4% of the area is under non-agricultural uses, while permanent pastures constitute 0.9%. The district has the highest per capita land availability (0.65 ha of geographical area) due to lower population. This district is having a significant tribal population (16.74%), second only to Khammam. The density of population (155/sq.m.) is the least among the NAIP districts. Over 46% of the rural population is illiterate with a work participation rate of 51%. Agricultural labourers and cultivators constitute just about 30% each with 39% of the workers engaged in nonagricultural activities. Adilabad has 13,13,985 adult cattle units (ACU) of livestock with over 8,00,000 cattle and 3,00,000 buffaloes. It has a high grazing pressure with over 12 adult cattle units per hectare of grazing area available in the district. Despite receiving highest rainfall (1104 mm) among the NAIP districts, Adilabad has suffered from major agricultural droughts during the past two decades. Sorghum has been continuously losing area to cotton, maize and blackgram. Presently, cotton represents maximum share (35.3%) followed by sorghum and rice. But the productivity of this crop is low (249 kg/ha during TE 2005 against the state average of over 300 kg/ha). Fruit crops area in the district increased from 3,344 ha in to 29,450 ha in The district contributes 10% to the total area under fruit crops in the state. Similarly, gain in area under vegetables has been noted (from a mere 3,500 ha in to 27,345 ha in ). This district contributes over 10% of the total area under vegetables in the state. However, area under spices (chillies and turmeric) has increased only marginally over the 5 year period. The district had a per capita income of Rs in , considerably less than the state average. The district has 16 Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees 3.2 per lakh ha of Net Sown Area (NSA). The past two decades have seen an impressive growth (45%) in agricultural advances made by Scheduled Commercial Banks, probably encouraging growth of agricultural sector.
