1 1.6 National Variety Trials in Southwest Victoria Location : Balliang (Sharkey s Rd, Balliang East, barley), Shelford (Mt Mercer Rd, wheat, barley, triticale, TT canola), Yalla-Y-Poora (Mt William Rd, wheat, barley, triticale, oats) and Hamilton (Skene s Woolshed Rd, Strathkellar, wheat, barley, canola), Clunes (approx. 5 km off the Clunes- Newstead rd in Foleys rd, oats) Funding : Grains Research and Development Corporation Researcher (s) : Mick Keating, Department of Primary Industries Author : Mick Keating, Department of Primary Industries (Ph ) Mick.Keating@dpi.vic.gov.au Acknowledgements : Many thanks to Chris & Eric Sharkey (Balliang), Dave Stephens (Shelford), David Robertson (Hamilton canola) and Lawrence Richmond (Clunes oats) who kindly donated land for the NVT trial program for the 2006 season. Many thanks to Graeme Moyle for his time and expertise in preparation of the Hamilton cereal trial site on his property. Many thanks to Kim Dolling & Southern Farming Systems Streatham branch for land at the Yalla-Y-Poora site. Rainfall (mm) April November : Shelford rainfall not recorded, 300mm at Hamilton canola site, 268mm at the Yalla-Y-Poora site, 239mm at the Clunes.300 mm at Balliang given are for all of Summary of Findings : All this information and more about the trials is available on the NVT website. Growers are referred to this site for specific variety or trial information. At all sites the 2006 results need to be looked at in the context of the highly unusual season. One obvious effect of the season was to favor early maturing varieties. For example the long season or winter type wheat varieties generally did not perform as they do in a normal season. Background to the trial : This set of trials was researched for the N.V.T programe which provides independent variety information for grain growers. Trial Inputs : Balliang trial sown on 30/05/2006. DAP fertilizer applied at a rate of 100 kg/ha at sowing. Screenings varied with site, low at Balliang (1 5%) and high for Franklin, Gairdner and Captsan at Streatham (24 29%). Plump grain was variable and is therefore presented in the table. 6 Site Mean (t/ha) CV (%) LSD (t/ha) Trial Observations : Trial yields at Balliang were average with reasonable rain for the growing season. All wheat and TT canola grain yields were below average due to very dry conditions and late season frosts which all contributed to a short growing season. Clunes oat trial yields were just below average with reasonable rain for the growing season. The Clunes trial was infected with bacterial blight which stopped the trial from reaching its full potential but overall a satisfactory trial. Southern Farming Systems Trials 2006 Page 6
