1 COFFEE TABLE BOOK RKVY PROJECT Success story of Geographical Indication registration Done under RKVY Scheme in Maharashtra 1. Title: Geographical Indication (GI) of Horticulture Crops from Maharashtra 2. Category: Horticulture Maharashtra is endowed with different agro climatic conditions. The state has 8 Agro Climatic Zones with different type of soil and climate. Maharashtra has always taken an initiative in adopting new technologies in Horticulture. During the recent past the state has emerged as one of the horticulture states. The export of grapes, mango, flowers and vegetables have shown increasing trend. This shows impressive achievements of state in the horticultural development. During the recent past the state has emerged as one of the horticulture states. With such achievements the thrust of farmers for newer technology and crops is ever increasing. 3. Challenges: Geographical Indication is an intellectual Property Right granted to the community which is involved in creation of unique product within that particular region. Such product is identified and associated with that specific region or place. Such projects registered under Geographical

2 Indication are recognized worldwide with their place of origin and have proved to be great help to Farmers, in terms of business opportunities, employment creation, economic development and increase in export. The GI registration also helps to curb the duplicity of those unique products. The GI registration will also help to prevent and protect these unique products from misuse, abuse and infringements. Geographical Indication is one of the prerequisite condition for entering into, selling the products into WTO member country i.e. for export. It is necessary to guard intellectual assets of our nation in this era of globalization. Under this component the following crops are proposed for Geographical Indication registration in Maharashtra Department of Horticulture under the banner of Department of Agriculture of Government of Maharashtra is established to help the rural community to achieve higher productivity in agriculture along with Profitability and Market access of the farming community in Maharashtra. This goal will be achieved by providing farmers with technical knowledge, market intelligence and market networks to support diversification and intensification of agriculture production aimed at responding to market demand. 4. Initiative: With this unique strategy, DOH has undertaken initiative for Jalna Sweet Orange, Marathwada Kesar mango, Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango, Vengurla Cashew, Sangli Turmeric, Solapur Pomegranate, Sangli Raisins, Jalgaon Banana, Jalgaon Brinjals, Purandar Fig, Lasalgaon Onion, Gholvad Chikoo and Beed Custard Apple in Jalna, Marathwada (division), Ratnagiri,

3 Sindhudurg, Sangli, Solapur, Jalgaon, Pune, Nasik, Thane and Beed districts respectively to get these products registered as a Geographical Indications. Department of Horticulture extended its support to Jalna Jilha Phale & Mosambi Bagayatdar Sangh which is registered organization of Jalna Sweet Orange growing farmers, Mango Growers Association, Aurangabad which is registered organization of Marathwada Kesar Mango growing farmers, Kelshi Parisar Amba Utpadak Sahakari Sangha Maryadit which is registered organization of Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango growing farmers, Kokan Kaju Samuh which is registered organization of Vengurla Cashew growing farmers, Sangli Turmeric Cluster Pvt. Ltd, Sangli, Sangli which is registered organization of Sangli Turmeric farmers, Akhil Maharashtra Dalimb Utpadak Sanshodhan Sangh, Pune which is registered organization of Solapur Pomegranate farmers, Maharashtra Rajya Draksh Bagaitdar Sangh, Sangli which is registered organization of Sangli Raisins farmers, Nisargraja Krushi Vidnyan Kendra which is registered organization of Jalgaon Banana, Navnirmiti Shetkari mandal which is registered organization of Jalgaon Bharit Brinjal, Akhil Maharashtra Anjir Utpadak Sanshodhan Sangh, Pune which is registered organization of Purandar Fig growing farmers, Baliraja Shetkari Sangh which is registered organization of Laslgaon Onion growing farmers, Maharashtra Rajya Chikoo Utpadak Sangh which is registered organization of Gholvad Chikoo growing farmers, Balaghat Sitaphal Sangh, Talegaon which is registered organization of custard apple growing farmers.
