2 Who is Kilimo Trust? Kilimo Trust is an independent regional agricultural development organization - working on agriculture for development across e EAC Region. It is registered in e Republic of Uganda and has a fully fledged subsidiary in Tanzania (Kilimo Trust Tanzania); and is processing e registration of Kilimo Trust Kenya and Kilimo Trust Rwanda. It implements projects aimed at enhancing integration in e EAC wi respect to food security. The core business of Kilimo Trust is to support e transformation of food and nutrition security in e EAC region away from high risk subsistence farming into lower risk trade-based systems wi a vision at, wiin 15 years (starting 2012): There is specialization in production of staples in e EAC to enable producers of e key food commodities to: Effectively utilize comparative advantages; and Farm as business and become competitive in e regional market. There is highly structured regional trade in food commodities and products, driven by private sector business linkages for each commodity. A high proportion of e food commodities produced in e EAC, is being transformed to differentiated value-added products preferred by e final consumer. To contribute to e above, Kilimo Trust focuses on enabling micro, small and medium scale enterprises of farmers, traders, agro-processors and ose supplying em wi inputs and services, to increase eir incomes rough optimum quantity and high quality of marketed products and services. The Kilimo Biashara Training Program is one of e enabling tools being used to deliver is. Therefore, Kilimo Trust has designed, tested and launched, ree courses aimed at building a critical mass of capacity for effective execution of regional trade in food among individuals as well as MSMEs. These courses are: a) Building Sustainable Agribusiness Linkages for Regional Trade in Food Staples - described in detail in e next sections; and b) Tapping into Regional Markets of Food Staples - designed to equip agri entrepreneurs wi information and tools on regional opportunities of food staples and how to take advantage of em. c) Also Kilimo Trust has adopted to local conditions e GIZ s Farmers Business School (FBS) - designed to develop farmer s attitudes, skills and competencies in business. 1

3 Building Sustainable Agribusiness Linkages for Regional Trade in Food Staples Course Objective: To build e capacity of a critical number of agri value chain actors from Uganda at can build and sustain regional trade linkages in e East African Community. What is e course about? At Kilimo Trust we describe a business linkage as a structured/ formal relationship between various value chain actors (e.g. buyers and suppliers of produce, suppliers and input providers, financial service providers and actors in e value chain) in order to increase eir efficiency, quality and profitability. This course provides participants wi information and knowledge on what is required to build, and sustain, ese multiple relationships.
