1 CHAPTER 1 Data input before Start up Setup farm & animal data For proper milking in the Astronaut, at least the following cow information must be entered in T4C: Animal number Responder/Tag number Lactation number (to be able to make different settings for heifers) Calving date (to separate colostrum and to get proper graphs and calendar info) Insemination date (to have proper dry off indications) Pregnancy confirmation date (to get animals on dry off list) Dry off date (to disable milking of dry cows!) Note: For a quick start-up: Have a list with all cow info available! Important information that must be entered in T4C prior to the launch of the robot: Milk separations: milk containing antibiotics which must be separated from the bulk tank Three-teat cows: teats which should not be milked Feed settings: to encourage the visit of cows to the robot Milk settings: to determine when cows are due for milking Quick Reference for Start Up Page 1 of 22

4 1.2 Enter new animals To enter all new cows in one single listing: 2. Menu: Daily Entry 3. Select: Batch Transfer 4. Select start-up (1) 5. Then enter information in recording areas below (2) 6. 5 1.3 Fast input responder (tag) numbers Fast input of responder numbers: Enter the proper responder number to cow number and save this data. Tip: Place a in the check box to save the data for all the animals at once (1) Note: To enter responder numbers: only enter the large printed number of the tag, so without prefix characters and zeros (e.g. FJ is entered as ) 2. 6 1.4 Enter Calving To confirm a calving: 2. Menu: Daily Entry 3. Select: Calving 4. Select the animal by clicking on the animal number in the data field Figure 4. Overview animals due for calving Tip: In case an animal is not present in the list, enter animal number and click Select, the animal will be added to the list, then click on the animal number or on Submit. A new window opens when selecting a cow. Existing calving history is shown on the left hand side. The new calving information is shown on the right hand side 1. 7 1.5 Enter Dry off To administrate a dry off: 2. Menu: Daily Entry 3. Select: Dry Off 4. Select the animal by clicking on the animal number in the data field Figure 7. Select category Dry off and select medicine (or add medicine) 4. Check dosage, teats and separation interval 5. Save settings Figure 8. Enter a Dry Off! Important: 1. Always enter treatment in T4C before actually treating the cow 2. Always be sure that milk separation settings are completely confirmed by the robots. Note: To be sure that antibiotic milk is separated from milk in the bulk tank; make sure that all medication is entered into the Medicines Library of T4C and that the proper waiting time for milk is entered in hours! 8 1.6 Enter Milk separation Milk separations must be set in T4C before start-up. To set a milk separation: 2. Menu: Daily Entry 3. Select: Milk Separation 4. 9 1.7 Set 3- teat cows To disable one or more teats from being milked by the robot: 2. Menu: Settings 3. Submenu: Milking 4. Select: General Milking 5. Select the animal by entering the number in the Search field (1) 6. Click in the column Milk teat (Yes/ No) on the teat not to be milked Figure 12. 10 1.8 Add a sire (AI or active on farm) Sires can be entered in T4C in two different ways depending on the type of breeding: (artificial insemination or natural bull on the farm) Add sire used for artificial insemination (AI): 2. 13 Feed Settings Feed settings can be entered in two ways: 1. Fixed feed amount (Fixed feeding) 2. Automatic feed calculation (Feed table) Caution: Discuss feed settings with the Lely expert, to ensure correct feeding of cows and good cow visits to the robot. Two different types of feed tables exist in T4C: 1. Lactation Feed table: determines daily robot feed allowance based lactation stage (number of days before/after calving or before dry off). 2. Milk Feed table: determines daily robot feed allowance based on average milk yield of the last 14 days). Typically the Lactation Feed tables are used at the start of lactation to build up the milk production and Milk Feed tables are used to control feeding in the remaining lactation. 14 1.10 Feed type names Tip: It is important to give feed types a clear and recognizable name, which not only represents what s in it, but also where it is dispensed (e.g. RB for robot, CM for Cosmix). Tip: If a Cosmix (feed station out of the robot) is used, then make a separate feed type for the feed dispensed in the Cosmix even if the feed is the same as in the robot. In this way automatic feed tables can control the distribution between the robot and the Cosmix. Example names feed types: Feed type 1 is a production concentrate: Feed type 3 is a production concentrate: RB pellet (Robot) CM pellet (Cosmix) Set up feed types: 2. Menu: Libraries 3. Submenu: Feed Types 4. Click on the name of the feed type to change or click on Add (at the right hand bottom) 5. Enter requested feed type data 6. Click Save Figure 20. 15 1.11 Set Feed table: automate Standard default start up settings on Herd level are based on days in lactation and not on milk yield. Approximately 14 days after start up the tables can be adjusted to feeding based on milk yield. Caution: Discuss feed settings with the Lely expert, to ensure correct feeding of cows and good cow visits to the robot. Set automate feeding 2. Menu: Settings 3. Submenu: Feedings 4. Tab: Feed Tables 5. Click on the icon in the column Additional Feeding Figure 21. Automate feeding (for herd and/or per group level) Note: Grey panels in the column Additional Feeding mean that this group has a specific feed table (in fig. 21 all groups are fed on Herd level). Important: Provide at least 4 Lb of feed throughout the lactation, so cows are attracted to the robot. T PMR (Partially Mixed Ration) provided at the feed barrier must be calculated based on the average milk yield minus 15 Lb of milk, to attract also low yielding cows to the robot. 16 A new window opens when selecting a feed table: 1. On the tab Table feed types can be added 2. Select the [ ] sign to add a feed type or a line or the [ ] sign to delete a feed type or a line. 3. Lactation Feed Table: a. Mark the appropriate time (period): before dry, after calving, before calving or after birth. b. Enter number of days for this setting to be active c. Enter the amount (kg/lb) for each feed type d. Click Save Note: Fill in the lactation feed table for the whole lactation period until dry off. The first four weeks after the start up cows should not be fed according to the milk feed table, because the average milk yield is not stable enough 4. Milk Feed Table a. Mark Milk Table b. Setup feed table for automatic feeding Tip: The setting dry off correction can be used to add a small feed table at the end of the lactation, which gradually lowers the amount of feed towards the moment a cow is dried off. 17 1.12 Fixed feeding: set fixed amounts A fixed feed amount can be set for an individual animal or for more animals at the same time. Tip: Use fixed feeding only for exceptional special need cows (sick, low condition, etc.) Make a note of these cows, to set them back to automate if they do not need special attention anymore. Settings will be saved automatically Figure 23. Set fixed feeding amount To set a concentrate amount manually (e.g. sick cows): 1. Go to the Fixed Feeding table (fig.23) 2. Mark Fixed for that specific cow and 3. Enter preferred amount 4. Settings will be saved automatically To reset concentrate amount to feed table: 1. Remove Mark Fixed for that specific cow 2. Around 00:05 hour feed settings will be recalculated 3. The feed amount will than be increased according to the amount that is set at maximum increase per day (fig 26.). 18 1.13 Check Feed amount In T4C feed settings are automatically calculated and adjusted (at 00:05 hour) Feed settings can be checked in two different ways: - Check at the tab Fixed Feeding - Check the individual cows in a report Check feeding at the Feeding- Feed Overview report: 1. Navigator: Analysis/ Reports 2. Menu: Reports 3. The Lely default report Feeding- Feed Overview shows the feed data of the herd. 4. Click on the cow number (blue) and the Cow Card of that cow will be opened 5. Go to tab Feed Visits : to view the feed intake of this cow Check feeding at Fixed Feeding : 1. Open Feed information table by clicking on Feed button (1) 2. If cows are fed according to the automate feed table the amount is shown in grey, if cows are on fixed feeding, there is a mark in the fixed feeding box, and the amount is shown in black (2) Figure 24. 19 The setting Maximum increase per day (kg/lb) and Maximum decrease per day (kg/lb) limits the daily increase and decrease of the concentrate to small healthy steps. For start-up of a new robot system: to get the full feed amount at the first day set the maximum increase and decrease to 8 kg (16 lb). Important: Do not forget to reset the maximum increase and decrease per day to 0,4 kg/day after the start-up period. Set maximum increase and decrease per day (kg) 2. Menu: Settings 3. 20 Check & create a back- up At start up of the system the engineer will set automatic backups, which stores the backup on the hard disk of the main computer. Caution: It is the responsibility of the farmer to: 1. Check whether a back-up is successfully carried out 2. Make regular backups to external media (USB, CD, DVD) Check the automatic back-up: 1. Navigator: Maintenance 2. Menu: Back- up/ Restore 3. Check the column Successfully done. It shows the last date and time when the automatic back-up was created Figure 27.
