2 FARM BUILDING SERIES CIRCULAR 713 (Revised) ING PARLOR PLANS PREPARED BY B. F. CARGILL This flder has be prepared fr thse farmers wh are interested in selecting a milking parlr. Plans f the five parlr types appearing n the cter spread are described briefly belw. The plans and ideas prested were made in cperatin with the Farm Managemt Departmt and are apprved by the Dairy Departmt, Michigan State Cllege. TYPE 1. (STANCHION) Nt Illustrated Esstially, the Type 1 parlr cnsists f 4 t 12 cnvtinal barn stanchins. It is nt a walk-thrugh type parlr. It is rdinarily fund in barns that were riginally built fr 6 t 12 dairy cws and the ther livestck. As the dairy herd utgrew the number f stanchins the cws were turned lse in an p p and brught t the stanchins nly fr milking and grain. This type parlr can be develped at a small cst and the p barn system used. If the peratr is nt satisfied he can easily return t the cnvtinal system by adding mre stanchins in the p area. TYPE 2. (ABREAST ARRANGEMENT) Plan N. 723-A sheet Type 2 parlr is the mst cmmn in Michigan. It shws prgress ver Type 1, because fur walkthrugh stalls are cnfined t a small rm. Cws ter the parlr by a side dr and mve int the stalls. Grain is fed in a bx munted n the exit dr in frnt f each stall. After milking, the exit dr is ped and the cw returns t the p. Next t Type 1, this parlr is the least expsive t build. The stalls are 3' - 6" t 4' - 0" in width. The trance dr is 4' - 0" and the exit dr at least 3' - 0" wide. The parlr flr shuld be 18" t 24" abve the p flr, and the milk huse dr in the cter f the back wall f the parlr. Use a brushed surface n all cncrete flrs. A neck chain r tie is smetimes needed at the frnt f each stall. TYPE 3. (ABREAST ARRANGEMENT) Plan N. 723-A sheet This parir is designed s that in the future it may be cnverted int a Type 4, Tw-Pit Parlr.. This parlr is an imprvemt ver Type 2 because there is a wrk area betwe stalls 1-2 and 3-4. Each wrk area shuld have grain strage, a pail fr udder wash, and a strip cup. If the lng hse type milker is used its pail is placed in this same wrk area. Cws cme in the side dr and leave thrugh a dr in frnt f their respective stall. Type 2 and 3 use the same milking prcedure. The stall widths are 31", and the wrking area 28" t 30" wide. The trance dr is 4' - 0" and the exit drs 31" in the clear. Grund grain shuld be stred verhead s that the grain can be delivered by gravity t the grain bxes in the frnt f each wrk area. A chain hked acrss the psts in the rear f each cw will prevt them frm backing ut f the stall. The parlr flr shuld be 18" t 24" abve the p flr. (Cntinued n back page.) 5 TYPE 4. (TWO PIT PARLOR) Plan N. 723-Al-47 2 sheets Type 4 is similar t Type 3 except that the wrk areas are 3'' lwer than the cw stalls. Differce in elevatin is gained by having the peratr g dwn and the cw g up frm the level f the back f the parlr, which makes it pssible fr the peratr t d the milking withut stping dwn as is necessary in Types 1, 2, and 3. Pit width is 28" t 3''. Stall width shuld have a 31" clearance. The ramp slpe can range frm 5" t 7" per ft f run. Cleats shuld be used n the ramp surface t prevt cws frm slipping. TYPE 5. (TANDEM ARRANGEMENT) Plan N. 723-Al-48 2 sheets Again, as in Type 4, the peratr is 30" belw the stall level and usually the peratr ges dwn 12" and the cw up 18". In this arrangemt the peratr can wrk mre efficitly than in any f the ther type parlrs. Anyne f the fur cws can be reached with a minimum number f steps. This parlr has three variatins. One variatin has the parlr built in ne d f the barn with the cws tering and leaving frm the side f the parlr. The size is th 29' - 0" x 10' - 0". The ther tw variatins have the parlr alng a wall r extding ut int the cter. These tw variatins are used where there is rm in frnt f the parlr fr the cws t leave. The size is th 21' - 6" x 10' - 0". Grain is stred verhead with grain chutes leading int the parlr (ne ver each feed bx). A metering type grain feeder is placed in each chute, reducing the time and steps nrmally required fr feeding grain. Cws shuld face away frm the milk huse. The parlr flr shuld be 18" t 24" abve the p flr and the milk huse dr in the cter f the back wall f the parlr. Use a brushed surface n all cncrete flrs. TYPE 6. (I N LI N E ARRANGEMENT) Plan N. 723-Al-51 3 sheets This type is adapted t large herds where tw m nrmally d the daily wrk. Fr efficit peratin it requires tw m and fur milking units. At each stall there shuld be a pail fr udder wash, a strip cup and a grain chute. This is the mst expsive type discussed, but it is ecnmical fr the individual interested in milking a large number f cws. This is the nly parlr described where tw m and fur units milk twice as many cws per hur as ne man and tw units in parlr types 3, 4, and 5. The cw alley is 3' - 0" wide and the stall 31" at the widest pint. The milking pit shuld be at least 4' - 0" wide and 28" t 30" belw the level f the stall. The stall gates are ped and clsed frm the pit. This parlr shuld be alng ne side f the barn and nt alng ne d. Recmmdatins fr Ecnmical and Efficit Milking Parlr Operatin 1. Train the cws t be handled frm either side. 2. Stre the grain verhead with a chute delivering the grain t the parlr. The chute shuld have in it a mechanical metering device fr measuring the grain ratin. This inexpsive device will prevt rehandling the grain. 3. Wrk nly ne man in the parlr with the exceptin f Type 6 and perhaps Type Practice a fast milking prcedure. 5. Use a self-clsing dr fr the trance dr and rpes t p and clse the drs leading frm the stalls in Type 3 and Build the parlr flr 18" t 24" abve the p flr. 7. Recess the feed bxes int the drs t reduce the amunt f grain spilled by the cws. 8. Prvide each stall with fur square feet f windw area. (Fur stalls, sixte square feet.) 9. Lcate the milk huse dr ff the cter f the back wall f the parlr. 10. Prvide a flr drain in each parlr.
