3 Q.2 (A) Give geographical reasons : 1. Animal husbandry is a complementary occupation. Ans. 1. Animals are important resources in India. Animal husbandry and dairy development have an important place in the economy of India. 2. This is an important occupation for the landless and small land holders. In the suburban areas it is a complementary occupation. 3. Since agricultural produce is inadequate for the people in the hilly, tribal and drought prone areas, these people domesticate livestock. 4. Some of the animals are used for agriculture and transportation. They also provide milk, meat, eggs, and manure. Considering these benefits animal husbandry is a complementary occupation. 2. Animal husbandry and dairy development have an important place in the economy of India. Ans. 1. This is an important occupation for the landless and small land holders. The Kathiawadi (Saurashtra), Nagori (Rajasthan), Malwa (M.P) and Khillari (Maharasthra), are important varieties of oxen in India.Gir (Saurashtra), Sahiwal (Punjab), Deoni (Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh) are breeds of cows which give large quantity of milk Jersey, Brown, Holstein are cross breeds of cows. 5. The population of cattle is high in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh etc. 2. Buffalo resources. Ans. 1. India has the highest buffalo population in the world. 57 % of the world s buffaloes are found in India % of the milk production in India comes from buffaloes. 3. The famous breeds of buffaloes in India are Jaffrabadi and Mahesana from Gujarat, Niliravi from Punjab, Murha from Haryana, Bhadwari from Uttar Pradesh, Nagpuri from Maharashtra. 4. Goats are found in large number in the areas of low rainfall, high plateaus and mountainous region in the states of Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 3. The goats in the Himalayan region have white and soft hair and are called Chamba and Guddi. The goats from the Yamuna and Chambal river valleys are called Jamunapari. The goats of Maharastra are Surati. 4. Sheep are reared along the mountain slopes of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. 5. The best quality of white wool called Pashmina is obtained from the wild sheep in the Kashmir area. Bikaneri sheep are famous for wool production in Rajasthan. 4. Milk production. Ans. 1. Farmers were given other facilities such as special breeds of cows and buffaloes, nutritious fodder, veterinary care services and capital for other activities 3. The programme Project Operation Milk Flood has been chalked out by the Government of India to increase the milk production 4. The objectives of this programme are to provided a fair price to the farmer for their products. 5. It also has the objective of connecting the rural and the urban areas. 6. The other objectives are to increase the intake of milk in the diet of the common man and to provide employment in the rural areas. 6. Meat production. Ans. 1. Meat is obtained from goats, sheep, cattle and pigs. 2. The main slaughtering centres are located at Deonar in Mumbai, Usagaon in Goa and also at Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad. 3. Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, West Bengal etc. are the leading states in meat production. 7. Skin and hides production. Ans. 1. Leather is obtained from skin of animals. 2. It is used to make footwear, bags, purses, wallets, jackets, suitcases, belts, automobile seats, saddles etc. 3. Leading regions in leather footwear production are Kolhapur in Maharastra and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. 4. States which have high production of animal hides are Gujarat, Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. 8. Wool production. Ans. 1. In India the best quality of wool is produced in the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh 2. Low quality wool is produced in southern states of India. 3. Carpet, shawls, sweaters, caps etc. are made from wool. 9. Sericulture. Ans. 1. Silkworms are reared on the leaves of mulberry, castor and oak trees. 2. Karnataka ranks first in the production of silk in India. 3. This is followed by Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. 59

6 10. Poultry farming. (March 08) Ans. 1. Poultry occupation is mainly done to get meat and eggs. 2. India ranks fifth in the production of eggs in the world. 3. This occupation is considered as complementary to agriculture. 4. This occupation is well developed in the sates of Andhra Pradesh. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Kerala. 11. Sea fishing. Ans. 1. India has a long coast line of 7517 kms and is surrounded by water on three sides and thus sea fishing is very important in India. 2. Sea fishing is carried out along the coastal regions upto 25 metres depth. 3. The main species of fish include sardines. mackerel, tuna, bonito, prawns, pompfret etc. 4. Fishing is practised in deep waters far away from the sea shore with the help of modern boats and large fishing nets. 5. Maharashtra is the leading state in sea fish production. 12. Fresh water fishing. Ans. 1. India has large number of rivers, lakes, canals, streams, tanks etc. in which fishing is done. This type of fishing is called as inland water fishing. 2. Species like rohu, dok, katla etc. are found in the fresh water. 3. The state of West Bengal ranks first in fresh water fishing. 4. Besides Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra also practise the occupation of fresh water fishing. 13. National fish seedling programme. Ans.
