Whitmuir a working farm growing food everyday 16 miles from Edinburgh acres of living learning space

Farming today Across the industrial world we are not farming, we are mining Chemical farming dependent on artificial nitrogen high in carbon in terms of production Artificial nitrogen produces nitrous oxide run off Methane emissions from livestock 50 % topsoil lost in last 100 years 100 harvests left in the UK Destruction of ecological and biological systems 50 % wildlife lost in last 40 years

Food waste- what is the problem? If food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, after the USA and China Methane is 25 times worse than carbon It s a problem And changing behaviour is tough D + V + S > R Dissatisfaction + Vision + Steps

Houston we ve got a problem On our wee organic farm.what can we do to illustrate the many problems with the food system on a manageable scale making people curious and conscious changing their behaviour so they become food citizens instead of consumers?

2000m2 Why 2000m 2? just take an apple 2000m 2 of pasture and 4000m 2 arable Behaviour change by... growing together, harvesting together, cooking together, eating together, curing, pickling, composting together then growing together

2000 m 2 project in Berlin

There is a 2000 m 2 project in China

Meanwhile, back at 2000 m 2 in Scotland

So who s involved 2016 so far.. 1,200 children and adults unique school visits/activities 1,091 school volunteer hours 51 growing volunteers 786 unique growing volunteer visits 804 community growing volunteer hours

Composting and Food Waste Get a baseline establish what you want to compost and how much of it there is going to be (tonnage) it may be underestimated! Site specific planning every site is different; get advice from SEPA and APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) and others as early as possible (HACPP, Management Plan, team training, installation and maintenance costs) Involve your community in planning will people agree to take part? How many caddys will you need? Best time for collections? How will your collection or composting operation grow/ be sustainable?

2016 is Year of the Pulse The characteristic feature of legumes is Biological Nitrogen Fixation Legumes are distinctly different in flowering habit and good for biodiversity Faba bean Pea Lentil Blue lupin White lupin

In a handful of soil there are more microbes than people on earth! Soil biodiversity the good, the bad and the ugly!

We need your help! 1. Try to finish your lunch! 2. Collect any leftovers to feed Big Hanna and make compost
