2 Definition of Organic Agriculture Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.

3 ORGANIC AGRICULTURE ACT OF 2010 (RA 10068) Approved April 6, 2010 An act of providing for the development and promotion of organic agriculture in the Philippines and for other purposes

4 Organic agriculture (OA) is a strategy to sustainable agriculture world wide In June 2001 the first Organic Agriculture Congress was held in BSU. In 2005, EO 481 was released for the promotion and development of Organic Agriculture in the Philippines. In March 2006 PP No. 137 declared May as Organic Food Month and on the succeeding year, the Philippine Development Assistance Program prepared a draft of the Philippine Organic Agriculture Road Map for

5 BENGUET STATE UNIVERSITY AS ORGANIC UNIVERSITY In 2006, The Regional Development Council issued RDC Ex Com Res No. CAR- 001 in support for the promotion of Organic Agriculture in the Cordillera and declaring Benguet State University as an Organic Agriculture University.

6 While the Benguet Sangguniang Panlalawigan Res. No commended BSU for its initiative in organizing the First Regional Organic Congress, the 2 nd Congress was conducted in 2007 In 2008, the University was given Certification as Producer of Organic Coffee by the Institute for Market Ecology, an international certifying body on organic products base in Switzerland.

7 COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE The Department of Soil Science Offered Soil Science 155:Organic Farming as Elective Course of BSA Soil Science Major students since in 2001

8 The offering of organic agriculture as a major field in the BSA is in response to the commitment of the university as an organic university. It is a means to sustain organic agriculture, not only in the university, but in the region as a whole with the training of young people

9 It is also encompassing with the mission of the College of Agriculture To develop people with a culture of excellence and social conscience who actively promote environmentally friendly technologies for improving the quality of life,

10 And also in attaining its Goals in Instruction To offer programs responsive and relevant to local, national and global needs.

11 OBJECTIVES OF THE CA To offer relevant courses in response to the quest for healthier food and environment and abate global warming. To train manpower who shall establish organic agriculture enterprises. To train manpower who shall conduct research and extension activities in organic agriculture; and To maximize the manpower and other fund resources of the University

12 The Department of Soil Science (DSS) DSS coordinates the program with the following functions: 1. Screens prospective major students, 2. Prepares class schedule in collaboration with department concerned who shall identify the faculty members to teach, 3. DSS is the mother department of all BSA major students in organic agriculture and assist the students upon admission until they graduate.

13 Faculty Members Faculty members from different departments in the College according to the field of specialization. Those involved in research and extension in organic agriculture are also prioritized to teach. Organic practitioner are also invited as resource persons as the need arises

14 SY : The Department of Soil Science started to offer BSA Program with Organic Agriculture as a major based on BSA Curricular Program (approved by the College of Agriculture Academic Council and the University Academic Council and with University Board Resolution No. 475, s 1992; Effective 1 st Semester, SY with Minor Revisions in 1997 and 1998.)

17 SY : -2, 4 th year following the original CMO 14 s BSA 3 rd Students major in OA following the enhanced CMO No.14 s of them are scholars of the NOAB under the auspices of DA-ACEP -Each scholar has free matriculation and tuition fees; -Php monthly allowance -Php book allowance/sem -Php thesis allowance

19 Offering of other College departments : Major students are conducting thesis problems related to Organic Agriculture

20 Shared to: This Curricular Program Pampanga Agricultural College in 2011 Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology in Claveria since 2001 Other SUCs in CAR and in other regions and also as host SUC for the OJT students and observation tours like those from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 10 (CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, UPLB, VSU, RMTU,) etc

21 BSU s Extension Office conducted the training on Certificate on Practical Organic Agriculture (CPOA) started in The 1 st batch with 17 participants who were Prospective practitioners from Benguet Province and BSU researchers and staff of OA Farm with a subsidized fee of Php6,500.00@ (50% discount)for two weeks -Succeeding batches was conducted with much reduced registration fee from Php 6, to Php 5,000.00/trainee.

22 The offering of Master of Science in Organic Agriculture by the BSU s Open University is being worked out by Dr. Danilo P. Padua and Dr. Lita M. Colting. FYI: The CHED has approved it in principle in the early part of September 2013.
