1 A news letter brought to you by. Welcome to another news letter from Austasia Animal Products (AAP) established in Australia in to manufacture and market a range of organic trace minerals for the intensive and stock feed industries in Australia and New Zealand. Products are manufactured at the company s own ISO accredited factory located at Forbes in NSW. The information in this newsletter is gathered from a broad range of sources with a brief description in the newsletter with a link to the source available by clicking on the LINK EU milk prices slowly on the rise - -- EU milk prices continued to increase slowly in October. The average milk price for EU milk is.c/l (. Aus. cents/l) in the LTO Netherlands International October milk league when transferred to c/l at. protein and.% fat. The average price in October for Irish processors in the Irish Farmers Journal October milk league was. c/l. (. Aus. cents/l) Swiss milk processor Emmi AG, based in Lucerne Switzerland, and not in the EU or is not included in the EU average, paid.c/l. (. Aus. cents/l) to top the overall league. Are your cows getting the correct minerals? Aly Balsom Monday January : Are you feeding your cows the right amount of minerals? A recent study suggests most dairy producers are failing to meet their cow's needs When it comes to minerals, deficiency may be most farmers' primary concern, but over-feeding could be doing just as much.. What are the side effects of mineral deficiency/toxicity? For calcium, an excess during the dry period can lead to a high incidence of milk fever. For copper, deficiency symptoms include lightening of coat colour particularly around the eyes, weight loss, scouring, reduced milk yields and fertility problems. For zinc, a reduction in food intake and growth rate is symptomatic of a deficiency. How do I determine the mineral status of my cows? This varies from mineral to mineral. For some, a blood sample can provide a good indication, but for others levels don't vary greatly unless the diet is highly deficient or in excess. In the case of copper, a blood sample is useful to determine whether an animal is deficient, but a liver biopsy, or analysis of liver copper concentrations from cull cows can be more useful

2 UK Dairy Product Retail Price Indices In November, the RPI remained the same as the previous month, and was.% above a year earlier. The fresh milk index is down.% compared to last year and fairly static compared to last month (+.%). The Butter index increased.% from last month, but remains similar (-.%) to last November's figure. The cheese index is also similar to last year (-.%), and is down slightly compared to last month (-.%). Hot weather causes calves to reduce their feed intake, while also increasing their maintenance requirements, due to the energy required to keep cool. This results in a lowered average daily gain. When it is hot, they will eat more at night than during the day, so make sure they have enough feed so they can eat as much as they want during the cooler nighttime hours. The effects of heat stress on calves are not as evident as cold stress, when you can see a calf come down with pneumonia. The high critical temperature for a calf is C. A calf s respiration rate increases when the temperature rises above this level as it tries to keep itself cool. Calves need to be kept as cool as possible during hot days. Provide shade and fans where possible, and make sure your ventilation systems are working optimally. Water is the most important thing you can give a calf to cool off. During the summer, it is ok to switch to shavings instead of straw, as shavings will not retain as much heat.

3 Master milk fat depression Hot weather is often blamed for suppressing fat levels, but milk fat depression is actually a multifactorial problem, explains Martha Baker, dairy nutrition specialist with Purina Animal Nutrition LLC. One area that can influence milk fat production is starch content of the diet. Technology, like rumen degradable starch testing, can help you assess starch levels in ration ingredients and how they will perform in the cow. Different ingredients ferment faster in the rumen than others, Baker explains. This affects the dynamics of the rumen and can have a major impact on milk fat levels. An awareness of the rate of starch digestion in the rumen is critical when troubleshooting milk fat depression. Rumen degradable starch testing allows you to very quickly rule out starch as a culprit of suppressed milk fat levels. You also should assess how many pounds and what percent starch is being fed. Facial eczema - Preventing facial eczema The first sign of facial eczema may be a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores. These cows may be restless; seeking shade, there may be thickening and peeling of the white areas of the skin and the udder and teats. Some worrying statistics: Milk production of animals with sub clinical FE (i.e. no outward signs) can be decreased by up to %. It is estimated that for every of clinical cases in a herd another % of the herd may have sub clinical eczema, There are main principles in prevention: Minimise intake of toxic spores & Decrease the effects of the toxic spores by zinc treatment Prevention of Facial eczema Zinc supplements can be effective for facial eczema control and prevention with the aim to maintain the cows blood serum level at - micromoles/litre. The desired dietary intake of elemental zinc when prevention dosing is mg/kg live weight /day Although ZinMet is recognised as a good way to boost The immune system it is not recognised as a preventative for facial eczema

4 World Milk Production The US is by far the largest producer of cow s milk in the world with Australia only producing % of the milk produced by the top twenty producing countries. The level of production in the top twenty countries has varied with the largest growth over the last ten years being in China reported at % this is followed by Turkey Pakistan % India and Brazil %. New Zealand increased % and the US production has increased % Countries that have reduced production from ten years ago are Ukraine, Australia, Japan, Italy and Russia. 6 China s fluid milk production is expected to rise by five percent to.mmt based on a six percent growth in the dairy herd to. million head. To better manage higher production under tight domestic resources (land and water) and higher costs (feed grains and labor), China s commercial dairy industry is focusing on improving yields. Germany, New Zealand, and Australia are the top three suppliers of China s fluid milk imports, accounting for nearly percent of China s total imports. Germany s market share outpaced New Zealand this year due to price competition. New Zealand s current export price to China of $, per ton is more than double Germany s export price of $ per ton.. Australia has to compete in the world export market with the US with their dairy export subsidies and with the EU who had massive subsidies under their Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). As the result of the Global Financial Crises this has been wound back and is to be further reduced this year. Some of the cost advantages are also as a result of other programs that reduce the cost of feed stuffs. 7 FAO Food outlook (Global Market Analysis November ) ((FAO) Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, you can click on their logo below to go to their site.) International prices of dairy products began to strengthen in mid-, reversing the steady decline that had characterized the previous twelve months. The change in trend resulted from a tightening of supplies to the world market The absence of substantial growth in milk output in the principal exporting countries is likely to mean a further upward movement in prices.
