3 ABOUT FAO The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With 194 member states, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide. We believe that everyone can play a part in ending hunger.

5 WHAT WE DO FAO s strategic objectives: Help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition Make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and Reduce rural poverty Enable inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises sustainable

6 AREAS OF WORK The Agriculture & Consumer Protection department works with partners to address the range of issues that affect food from farm to table including: improved production; management and conservation of crops and livestock; plant and animal pest and disease prevention and response; food safety and quality; and agricultural research and extension. The Climate, Biodiversity, Land and Water department has two main areas of focus: Climate Change where FAO supports countries to both mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change and Land And Water where FAO aims to enhance the agricultural productivity and advance the sustainable use of land and water systems. The Economic and Social development department works on social protection, gender equality, decent rural employment preventing child undernutrition and collates and disseminates food and agricultural statistics globally.

7 AREAS OF WORK The Fisheries & Aquaculture department works to strengthen global governance and the managerial and technical capacities of members and to lead consensus-building towards improved conservation and utilization of aquatic resources. The Forestry department helps nations manage their forests in a sustainable way. The Programme Support department supports the achievement of results under FAO s Strategic Framework by mobilizing resources, preparing and responding to food and agricultural threats, help countries increase investment in agriculture. The Corporate Services & Administration department delivers services and support functions in travel, procurement and other administrative areas.

9 WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Advanced university degree in one of the main fields of work of the Organization Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish, and limited knowledge of one of the other two, or Arabic, Chinese or Russian Effective teamwork and communication skills Willingness to work and travel anywhere in the world

10 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES At FAO we have different career opportunities: Professionals staff are internationally hired and occupy leadership functions, or positions requiring significant technical expertise. Vacancies are advertised on FAO s website for all duty stations where FAO is present. General Service staff include secretarial and administrative staff but also security guards, nurses and building technicians. Candidates can apply to the Roster that opens once a year. When there is need for a general service position, the candidates considered qualified are invited for an interview. Consultants are short-term employment opportunities, whenever there is the need for expertise beyond that of regular staff. These opportunities are also advertised on FAO s website.

11 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Associate Professional Officers Programme offers a structured learning experience to young graduates as well as exposure to international cooperation activities in a highly specialized and challenging environment. Associate Professional Officers are young people selected and sponsored by their own government to work for FAO. Junior Professional Officers Programme is a recruitment initiative targeted for talented, highly qualified professionals to start a career as an international civil servant with FAO. Candidates from non- and under- represented countries are encouraged to apply. Purposes of assignments vary and may have a country-specific, regional, sector-based or thematic focus. Global Internship, Volunteers and Fellows Programme is an inclusive platform to promote youth engagements to support the Organization s work to realize a world without hunger and malnutrition
