1 Khammam District Profile Khammam is spread over an area of 15,81,000 ha with nearly 48% of the area under forests, highest among the 8 NAIP districts. While gross cropped area is 4,79,000 ha, the net sown area is 28.5% of the total geographical area. The cropping intensity is 109% and about 8% of the area is under non-agricultural uses while permanent pastures constitute 2.5%. The district has a total population of 25,78,927 of which SC population is 4,26,692 (16.6%) and ST population is 6,82,617 (26.5%). Among the NAIP districts Khammam has the highest number of tribals. Rural literacy is just over 51% and work participation rate is 52.5% while 72% of the workers are engaged in agricultural activities, cultivators represent 22.9%. The district has the highest grazing pressure (17.7 ACU/ha grazing area) among the NAIP districts. Cattle and buffaloes are almost equal in number with 1,23,374 small ruminants. The district receives 1096 mm rainfall annually and is relatively less droughtprone. Irrigated area in the district accounts for 39%. Rice has maintained its share in the cropping and accounts for over 37%. While cotton has gained since 1995, crops like greengram and sorghum have lost the area. The productivity of cotton (359 kg/ha) during TE-2005 is more than the state average. The productivity of rice (2523 kg/ha) however is less than the state average. Khammam has the largest area under horticulture crops next only to Nalgonda and Anantapur ( ). The district has seen an increase of over 10,000 ha under horticulture crops since Area under vegetables and spices has increased marginally during this period. The district had the highest per capita income (Rs ) among the NAIP districts, much above the state average. The annual growth of agricultural lending between 1995 and 2005 showed an increase of an impressive 43% highest next only to Adilabad. The district has 15 APMCs representing 3.6 per lakh ha of Net Sown Area.

Mondikunta is about 35 km from Bhadrachalam town. Tummalacheruvu is located at about 5 km from Mondikunta and connected by a kacha road. Taking them as role models, the dry land cultivators are cultivating cotton on large scale and getting entrapped in to the vicious circle of loans, by various private money lenders, who collect back loans on weekly basis. 3.
