3 INTRODUCTION Project area: Truong Long Hoa & Long Vinh commune, Duyen Hai dist., Tra Vinh province Objective: Long-term goal: Ecosystem in coastal areas is improved in order to improve income for farmers doing aquaculture so that mangroves are better conserved. Short-term goal: Develop and trial model of shrimp - crab mud clam integrated with mangrove in Duyen Hai district of Tra Vinh province. 3

7 INITIAL RESULTS 1. Households survey - In Long Vinh & Truong Long Hoa commune: 6 households 12 ha (50% mangroves 50% aquaculture)

8 INITIAL RESULTS 2. Implementing poly-culture pilot (shrimp-crab-mud clam) a. Pond design and improvement: apply lime powder, remove misc. fish/creatures, block the nursing area with small net. b. Breed support: Each HH receives 400 kg mud clam (from clam/kg); 2,000 crab (size from 6-10 mm); shrimp ( at stage PL20). c. Feed support: use industrial feeds for baby shrimps and crabs during nursing stage. d. Monitoring toolkits: ph, turbidity, toxicity, temperature and salinity.

9 INITIAL RESULTS 3. Monitoring project activities - Diary for recording project activities: breed quality, pond improvements, feeds, environmental criteria, diseases and harvests for the whole farming cycle.

10 INITIAL RESULTS Mangrove trees are growing well, canopy helps to shield the sunlight and dead leaves provide natural feeds for shrimp and crab. Newly planted mangroves Mature mangroves

11 INITIAL RESULTS + Mud clams grow fast and weigh from clams/kg on average. Keep growing them for filtering water and cleaning the environment for shrimp and crab. + Shrimps and crabs have been harvesting by draining water from the pond. Other aquatic species are also harvested by this way.

14 OVERALL EVALUATION A. Problems and difficulties - Some households live in too remote area; some have too small mangrove area and some pond designs are not up to project s standard. Households have to spent great effort in time and labour for pond design and improvement. - Unexpected changes in weather; shrimp survival rate is affected due to long cold period in nursing stage. - The recent comeback of white spot syndrome and liver damages in shrimp within project area.

Lessons learnt: OVERALL EVALUATION Advantages: + Large area of mangroves that meets project requirements + Households are interested in project activities + Poly-culture trial gains attention from local community + Increasing productivity and survival rate of shrimp and crab + Improving income of households. Difficulties: + Follow local schedule in breed stocking + Unexpected changes in weather + Shrimp diseases (white spot syndrome and liver damages)

16 CONTINUING ACTIVITIES Continue to harvest shrimp, crab and mud clam. Disseminate project results to local people and authority.
