2 Introduction Ana akwanire Situated at the base of majestic Mount Mulanje, Nankhwali is a commercial farm established in The farm started growing a range of vegetables and in 2008 diversified into sweetpo- tato multiplication. It is now one of the largest commercial multipliers of quality sweetpotato planting material in the country. The farm is registered under the Companies Act on 12 December 2014 (Certificate N o ). Nankhwali Farm entered the sweetpotato multiplication market in response to an increased demand from NGO s working in development and disaster response for planting material of new sweetpotato varieties. There was particularly high demand for the orange fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) varieties which were released in Malawi in Nankhwali focuses on 5 orange fleshed sweetpotato varieties that are high yielding and high in Vitamin A: Chipika, Kadyaubwerere, Kaphulira, Mathuthu and Ana Akwanire. The name was given because single plant produces 5 to 7 medium sized roots, enough for each child in a family of 6 children (families with many children). The vines are very spreading hence it has high vine growth and yield. It is a late maturing variety between 5 and 6 months which can produce up to 25 MT/ha.

3 Chipika It was named after the big roots it produces. Chipika vines are mainly Erect but they can spread in some instances. The maturity period is 4 to 5 months and it can produce approximately 35 MT/ha. Chipika prefers the higher temperatures of the rainy season and in the Shire River Valley. Kadyaubwerere It was named mainly after its taste, one would always want to eat some more. Kadyaubwere vines are spreading and has a maturity period of 4 to 5 months. Nankhwali strives to renew basic starter material for multiplication of OFSP vines via purchases from DARS/Bvumbwe. All Nankhwali multiplication fields are regularly rogued to remove any diseased plants and off types, ensuring healthy planting material of a pure variety. Nankhwali is registered with the Government of Malawi Seed Inspection Service and all fields are formally inspected at least twice a season - first in the midseason and then again prior to harvest. Nankhwali planting material is prepared in bundles of 100 x 30 cm long cuttings which are labelled with the name of the variety and the Nankhwali contact information to facilitate traceability. Physical location Nankhwali Farm is located along the Mulanje Phalomber Road in Mbewa Village, T.A. Mabuka, Mulanje District, 11km from Mulanje Boma, along the Nankhwali River. Nankhwali Farm has 11 hectares of land which is irrigated. Seven hectares are currently dedicated to sweet potato multiplication. The farm has adequate water supply from the Nankhwali River and gravity irrigation with overhead sprinkler system. As a result Nankhwali Farm is able to harvest up to 20,000 bundles of high quality and certified sweetpotato vines twice a year to meet both rainy reason as well as winter season demand.

6 Purchasing Nankhwali Vines Customers are encouraged to order planting material at least 3 months prior to planting. This will allow Nankhwali to ensure that the ordered material is multiplied and ready when needed. For large orders, Nankhwali encourages a down payment to guarantee the sale.
