1 East and Southeast Asia 2011 Global Strategic 2011 Planning Global Strategic Planning Flood Update Robert J J Holmer October 31-November 3, Headquarters 1 2 Flood Update Flood Update KPS ESEA Office Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport 3 4 What happened in 2011 Capacity Building As of 3rd quarter of 2011, ESEA had a total of 21 staff members: 7 staff (1 IRS, 6 NRS) are based at ESEA s Administrative Office at Kasetsart University's Bangkhen Campus in Bangkok. 14 staff (1 IRS, 13 NRS) are based at ESEA s Research and Training Station at Kasetsart University's Kamphaeng Saen Campus. 7 NRS finished 40 hours of English language proficiency course with financial support of MOFA. 3 Research Assistants and 1 Technical Assistant participated in selected sessions of the 30th International Vegetable Training Course (IVTC) 7 Field Workers participated in selected sessions of the Farmer Field School conducted concurrently with the 30th IVTC. 5 6

3 Improved research facilities Improved research facilities Laserleveled fields Field Office Demonstration Garden Efforts to strengthen relationships with local partners Kasetsart University 5,000 Disaster Response Seed Kits were turned over to Kasertsart University on May 18, ESEA will be participating for the second time at the KU annual agricultural fair Efforts to strengthen relationships with local partners KU was included as partner in two project proposals submitted to the GIZ Small Grants Program: Understanding Urban and Peri-urban Vegetable Production and Marketing Systems through GIS-based Community Food Mapping in Greater Bangkok, Thailand (Lead: University of Freiburg) Exploring the potential of endophytic entomopathogenic fungi and biochar for increasing sustainable vegetable production in Thailand (Lead: University of Goettingen) Kasetsart University Partnering with KU in the Workshop Roles of Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture for Future Food Security in cooperation with the BMZ funded Food Security Center of the University Hohenheim (postponed to 2nd week of December 2011). Kasetsart University Involvement in the 9 BOWON project of KU AVRDC will provide technical assistance for the establishment and management of school gardens. A detailed plan for school gardens will be jointly determined by KU and AVRDC

4 Kasetsart University Mahidol University Several staff members of KU tapped as resource persons for lectures and laboratory sessions of the 30th IVTC Several senior staff members of Mahidol University, including a former Senator of Thailand and former FAO director, served as resource speakers for nutrition related topics in module II of the 30th IVTC Mahidol University AARNET RD participated the 6th Steering Committee meeting in Brunei from May Brunei Upon request, re-submitted proposal The collection and conservation of indigenous vegetables (IVs) and increased production of IVs with commercial potential in Negara Brunei Darussalam 24 Philippines Attended the National Conference of the Department of Education on "National Greening" which includes the School Garden Program Preparation of MOA with DepEd on School Garden Program on-going Timor Leste MercyCorp submitted a project proposal Sustainable Food Security Innovations for Timor-Leste to EuropeAid which includes a provision for AVRDC to act as consultant for a vegetable component (seed systems; healthy gardening seed kits)
