Narmada Dam Project CBA.

Objectives I need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of development projects. I need to carry out a cost-benefit analysis and use this to decide whether the project should go ahead.

Starter What is development Development is social, political and economic progress that doesn t damage the environment. People; Can vote, Are treaty equally, Can access good jobs, pay, schools and hospitals, Can live in a safe and clean environment.

Task 1 ningzone/clips/539.flv FQ2Q Watch the video above and consider the impact of the dam on the local people.

How many of the seven aims and seven sins of development can you find in the evidence of Luharia s story? Tick the relevant boxes, then work out the total number of ticks. United Nations aims of development 1 Economic security 2 Food security 3 Health security 4 Environmental security 5 Personal security 6 Community security 7 Political security Total Task 2 Complete the 2 tables to help us see whether the Narmada Dam Project should go ahead. Put a tally in at least one box after you have read through the statements provided. The forest is ours. The land is ours. The River Narmada is ours. We are not going to leave all this. We will drown, but we will not move. UNICEF s sins of development 1 Development without infrastructure 2 Development without participation 3 Development without women 4 Development without environment 5 Development without the poor 6 Development without the do-able 7 Development without mobilization Total

The forest is ours. The land is ours. The River Narmada is ours. We are not going to leave all this. We will drown, but we will not move. The government employees came. They left this paper when nobody was at home. I just looked at it. How can I understand it? I can t read. And then his wife Bulgi added, They only offer us land on paper. But we can t cultivate on paper, can we?

move to a government resettlement site with salty drinking water and inadequate land. storing the water during the monsoon and releasing part of it to the river downstream in a regulated manner so that flood conditions get moderated. (The power generated is a bonus.)

India s big increase the country s food production by about 10%. About 10% of India s grain is eaten by rats each year. Adivasis - the original inhabitants of India, who have farmed their land by the Narmada for at least 12 generations will lose their land.

people along the river valley will lose their homes and livelihoods.

Ultimately in our culture we are taught that if it helps the society, then if you have to sacrifice little bit of your own, do it gladly, willingly, smilingly.

World Bank approves $450 million loan to India for Sardar Sarovar. India s Supreme Court stops construction supreme Court allows building construction to continue up to 90 metres.

Their project will eventually bring drinking water to 45 per cent of Gujarat s villages. Opponents charge, however, that Sardar Sarovar s budget contains no funding for provision of drinking water to village communities. Valley projects violated various environmental regulations from siltation and soil erosion, to the neglect of health, seismological, forest, wildlife, human, and clean water issues.

Activists accuse the police of beatings, rapes, and unjustified arrests in connection with their struggle. The water, which would have flown into the sea during the monsoon, would be stored to irrigate 4.9 million acres of land and supply drinking water to a population of 40 million in Gujarat. We are fishing people. They have taken away our livelihood. Before we used to eat two meals a day. Now we have to make do with one.

Now we are city dwellers. But I do not like it. I belong to my village. Do you think this is fair? They have flung us into the gutter here. Into this filth. Nobody thought about what would happen to us. Gujarat has been traditionally very strong in the chemical front chemicals and pharmaceuticals and the chemical industry has to depend quite heavily on water.
