3 We recommend using Headline on corn-followingcorn acres or areas where leaf diseases have been a problem in the past. We use the Acceleron Seed Treatment System on our corn and soybeans. On my farms we use nothing but 4-Star Seed from grass seed, alfalfa seed, seed corn and soybeans. four star testimony We love working with the owners of the company. They re real people and good neighbors. Our seed salesman is the BEST!! He s always there to serve us. The knowledge of the agronomist is unreal. He not only has book smarts, but he has lots of common sense too! Cliff Shudak Circle S Farms Pottawattamie County, Iowa 2017 seed book 2

11 SmartStax RIB Complete Corn Blend is a mix of 95% Bt. traited, 5% refuge seed. You get all the benefits of SmartStax technology, plus the convenience of 5% refuge seed interspersed in every bag. It has proven to have a 10 bu/a advantage over non-bt. traited corn and a 20 bu/a advantage over non-bt. treated corn + a soil-applied insecticide. VT Double PRO RIB Complete Corn Blend is a mix of 95% traited and 5% refuge seed. With refugein-a-bag, there s no need to calculate or plant separate, structured refuge in the Corn-Growing Area. It contains dual modes of action for maximum protection against corn earworm and other above-ground pests, like European and Southwestern corn borers and fall armyworm. Roundup Ready Corn 2 contains in-plant tolerance to Roundup brand herbicides, enabling growers to spray Roundup brands over the top, from planting through the V8 stage or 30-inch corn height, with excellent crop safety and no yield reduction. Compared to popular conventional corn programs, the Roundup Ready Corn 2 system costs less, while allowing hybrids to reach their maximum yield potential. While the U.S. regulatory agencies have given full approval to Roundup Ready Corn 2 for commerce in the U.S. for marketing and consumption as food, food ingredients and feed for livestock, certain regulatory approvals are pending in certain export markets. For more information on these approvals, or for assistance in locating domestic grain outlets, see the American Seed Trade Association web site ( or contact Monsanto directly at Roundup Ready 2 Xtend Soybeans is the industry s first biotech-stacked soybean trait with both dicamba and glyphosate herbicide tolerance. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend is built on the high yielding Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean technology. Headline is a fast-acting, broad-spectrum fungicide that delivers a high level of activity on more than 50 major diseases that can threaten yield and crop quality. Headline helps prevent diseases and provides protection for more than 90 crops, including corn, soybeans and wheat BASF Corporation. Acceleron Seed Treatment System helps maximize the performance potential of your seed and traits right from the start. Designed to complement new seed and trait products, Acceleron can improve stands and plant health to help maximize the performance potential of your crop. Before opening a bag of seed, be sure to read, understand and accept the stewardship requirements, including applicable refuge requirements for insect resistance management, for the biotechnology traits expressed in the seed as set forth in the technology agreement that you sign. By opening and using a bag of seed, you are reaffirming your obligation to comply with the most recent stewardship requirements. As of this printing no dicamba herbicide product has been approved for commercial in-crop use with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans. DO NOT APPLY DICAMBA HERBICIDE IN-CROP TO Roundup Ready 2 Xtend Soybeans in 2016 unless you use a dicamba herbicide product that is specifically labeled for that use in the location where you intend to make the application. While no in-crop use of dicamba is currently approved, some dicamba products may be labeled for weed control prior to planting a crop and subject to minimum plant back restrictions. IT IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL AND STATE LAW TO MAKE AN IN-CROP APPLICATION OF ANY DICAMBA HERBICIDE PRODUCT ON Roundup Ready 2 Xtend Soybeans, OR ANY OTHER PESTICIDE APPLICATION, UNLESS THE PRODUCT LABELING SPECIFICALLY AUTHORIZES THE USE. Contact the U.S. EPA and your state pesticide regulatory agency with any questions about the approval status of dicamba herbicide products for in-crop use with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend Soybeans and follow all pesticide product labeling. 18 plantingguides Estimating Plant Population An accurate estimate of plant population per acre can be obtained by counting the number of stalks in a length of row equal to 1/1000 of an acre. Make at least three counts at separate sections of the cornfield, figure the average of these samples, then multiply this number times one thousand. Row Width Row Length Equal to 1/1000 Acre Number and Length of Rows in an Acre One fairly accurate way to determine the number of acres in a cornfield, or portion of a cornfield, is by computing the length of the rows and the distance between rows. The following table shows the number and length of rows in one acre. Length If distance between row is: of Rows in Feet Weights and Measures Guide Linear Measure (Length) 1 league = 3 miles 1 mile = 5280 feet or 320 rods 1 furlong = 40 rods 1 rod = 16 ½ feet 1 yard = 3 feet 1 foot = 12 inches Square Measure (Area) 1 acre = 160 square rods or 43,560 square feet 1 sq. rod = 20 ¼ square yards 1 sq. yard = 9 square feet 1 sq. foot = 144 square inches Cubic Measure (Volume) 1 cubic yard = 27 feet 1 cubic foot = 1728 cu. Inches 1 cord (4 x 4 x 8 ) = 8 cord feet 1 cord foot (4 x 4 x 1 ) = 16 cord feet 2.5 cu. ft. of ear corn = 1 bushel 1.2 cu. ft. of shelled corn = 1 bushel Liquid Measure 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 4 gills 1 pint = 16 fluid ounces Fertilizer Weight and Measures Pounds of Active Nutrient per Gallon Liquid: n P K 1 gallon 28% (28-0-0) = lbs gallon = lbs gallon = lbs gallon = lbs gallon NH (82-0-0) = 5.15 lbs Dry Bulk: Ammonium Sulfate (21-0-0) Ammonium Nitrate (34-0-0) Urea (46-0-0) Diammonium Phosphate ( ) Ammonium Phosphate ( ) Coarse Muriate of Potash (0-0-60) Volume Conversion Factors Cu. ft. x 0.8 = bushels grain or shelled corn Cu. ft. x 0.4 = bushels ear corn Cu. ft. x 7.48 = gallons Cu. ft. x 62.4 = pounds of water Gallons x = pounds of water Growing Degree Definition for Corn Amount of time, or heat, required to mature a specific hybrid can be expressed in several ways. Use of Growing Degrees is a common method. The formula is: GD = (Daily max. temp* + Daily min. temp**) 2 * Use 86 if maximum temperature exceeds 86 F. ** Use 50 minimum temperature if less than 50 F lbs./cu. ft lbs./cu. ft lbs./cu. ft lbs./cu. ft lbs./cu. ft lbs./cu. ft. Gallons x = cu. ft. Cu. in. 1,728 = cu. ft. Cu. yd. x 27 = cu. ft. Cu. ft. 27 = cu. yds F Formula for Determining Yield per Acre (Corn) Use this formula to determine bu./a of No. 2 (15%) shelled corn: (100 - harvest moisture) x (lbs. grain harvested) x ( ) / (row length, ft.) / (row width, in.) / (no.rows harvested) = bu./a Example: Six 30 rows 1,980 feet (120 rods) in length are harvested, yielding 6500 lbs. of shelled corn at 18.9% moisture: ( = 81.1) x (6500) x ( ) / (1,980) / (30) / (6) = bu./a Dry Measure 1 bushel = 4 pecks 1 peck = 8 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints The GDs are accumulated through the appropriate period or season. GD is a relative rating and should not be associated with absolute days. For example, on a day when the low is 48 and the high is 90, the GD is determined as follows: GD = ( ) - 50 F = 18 2 Formula for Determining Yield per Acre (Soybeans) Use this formula to determine bu./a of soybeans: (100 moisture) x (lbs. soybeans harvested) x ( ) / (row length, ft) / (row width, in.) / (no. rows harvested) = bu. of yield per acre at 13% Estimating Bin and Silo Capacity Round Bins: To estimate the capacity of a bin, multiply the depth in feet by the diameter squared (diameter x diameter). Multiply this by.628 to determine shelled corn capacity in bushels. Divide by 2 to determine bushels of ear corn storage. Square or Rectangular Bins: Multiply the length by the width by the depth of grain, all in feet. Multiply this by.80 to determine the number of bushels of shelled corn that can be stored in the bin. For ear corn, divide this figure by 2. Weight (Ordinary Commodities) 1 long ton = 2240 pounds 1 short ton = 2000 pounds 1 hundredweight (cwt.) = 100 pounds 1 stone = 14 pounds 1 pound (lbs.) = 16 ounces 1 ounce (oz.) = 16 drams TO 2,450 GD 2,300 TO 2,500 GD MORE THAN 2,500 GD 17 four star seed

Acres = Area in sq. ft. 43,560 plantingguides Soybean Hoop Method 1. How to do stand counts: NH 3 hose works well for determining populations of drilled soybeans. A 127 inch length of this hose fastened together at the two ends with a barb, wooden dowel or duct tape makes a good hoop that can be tossed on the field to determine the population. Each soybean found within the center of the hoop represents 5000 plants per acre. 2. A 28 diameter hoop, take the plants counted in the hoop times 10,000. Due to the smaller sample size take a few more counts with this size hoop. Rowed Bean Stand Count Distances is 1/1000th of an acre A real hula-hoop can be used to estimate drilled or broadcasted soybean populations. Randomly throw the hula-hoop in at least five locations in a soybean field and average the results. If you know the inside diameter of the hoop you can estimate the number of plants per acre.
