1 2005 Report on Field Demonstrations Funded by: Louisiana Soybean and Grain Research and Promotion Board and The United Soybean Board David Y. Lanclos, Ph.D. Assistant Professor/Specialist Soybean, Corn, and Grain Sorghum Rob Ferguson & Donna Morgan Extension Associates

2 Introduction The work reported herein is intended to verify results of research by the Louisiana State University AgCenter at the farm level. These results were observed in plots initiated by the Cooperative Extension Service personnel in cooperation with growers, seed and chemical company representatives, and researchers of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. These demonstration results ARE NOT INTENDED to replace replicated research, but only demonstrate that what has been discovered in small plot research is applicable in farm situations. We are indebted to industry for its support of our work by donating the seed and chemicals necessary for getting a large task completed. We are also very grateful to the Louisiana Soybean and Grain Research and Promotion Board and the United Soybean Board for their checkoff contributions which have supported this Extension program. We wish to further acknowledge donations of time, equipment, and land in addition to other resources by the producers which made this program possible. The following LSU AgCenter personnel were involved in one or more demonstrations and/or verification fields reported herein: Carol Pinnell-Alison, County Agent (Franklin) Jack Baldwin, Professor/Specialist (Entomology) John Barnett, Regional Director, Central Miles Brashier, CA (Pointe Coupee) Trent Clark, CA (Avoyelles) Keith Collins, CA (Richland) Barrett Courville, CA (Acadia) Glen Daniels, CA (Concordia) Terry Erwin, CA (Morehouse) Rob Ferguson, Extension Associate (Dean Lee Research Station) Jimmy Flanagan, CA (Iberia and St. Mary) Keith Fontenot, CA (Evangeline) Earnest L. 11 2005 Grain Sorghum Summary Approximately 100,000 acres of grain sorghum were planted in Louisiana in 2004, down 80,000 from last year. The decline in acreage was caused by a wet spring that led to a late start in planting and high fertilizer costs. Following the heavy rains, it became very dry early on, but because of grain sorghums ability to handle dry weather, yields fared well. The average yield across the state was 95 Bu/A. There were few reports of unusual weed or disease problems associated with grain sorghum production. There was some unevenness in the growth stage in many fields because of extreme drought, and certain areas of the field had less moisture available. 11

14 2005 Corn Summary In 2005, there were 360,000 acres of corn planted in Louisiana, with the most of the acreage being in the northeast portion of the state. Acreage was down because of high fertilizer costs and a wet spring that delayed planting. The average yield was 140 Bu/A, with a major difference between irrigated and non-irrigated fields. The southern and central portions of the state saw reduced yield due to the lack of moisture at kernel fill. The northeast portion of the state s yield was not as reduced because most of the corn acreage is irrigated there. 14

32 2005 Soybean Summary Approximately 920,000 acres of soybeans were planted in Louisiana in Around 60% of the total acres planted were in maturity group III and IVs. The remaining 40% were V and IVs. Soybean yields averaged 35 Bu/A across the state, a state yield record. Soybeans harvested late in the season had reduced yields caused by dry conditions. The biggest problems producers faced besides the drought late in the season were cercospera and the red banded stink bug. These issues were handled by proper chemical applications. There were a large number of green bean acres caused by drought stress. 32
