Current Professional involvements (i) Principally involved in the design and implementation of research and development programmes currently in the following: - Introduction, evaluation and conservation of fodder with emphasis on leguminous species including browses and native high protein species - Adapting hydroponic fodder system for feeding of livestock in Mauritius - Breeding, nutrition and reproductive management of meat goats and sheep - Establishment and consolidation of feed database in Mauritius for livestock - Implementing schemes and activities for boosting the goat sector and productivity enhancement for better Food Security - Implementing activities on forage cultivation and conservation with focus on home grown high protein forages - Technology transfer to farming community and follow up - Research on the use of homegrown protein as alternative to concentrate feeds for greater sustainability and less reliance on imported ingredients - Providing guidance to new promoters of goat and sheep development projects for Food Security in terms of farm layout, design of infrastructure, breeeding programme, establishment and management of pastures/fodder plots and herd management. (ii) Participation in brainstorming sessiong on issues pertinent to the livestock sector (iii) Priority settings for the formulation of livestock and feed-related policies (iv) Project write-up for seeking funding for livestock projects (v) Provision of research asistance to junior research colleagues and technicians A multidisciplinary approach is thus ensured at this level. 2

Current on-going & recently completed research & development projects: Completed: (i) Seasonal availability and nutritive value of forages and browses offered to stallfed goats in the smallholder village system in Mauritius (International Foundation for Science (IFS) funded) (ii) Decreasing mortality and enhancing productivity on goat farms in Mauritius for higher income earning (AusAid funded project under the AAA small grants scheme) (iii) Evaluation of the yield and nutritional potential of locally adapted, cultivated and introduced fodder species including tree /browse species (iv) Conservation of lucerne for hay and of fodder maize for silage. (v) Comparative evaluation of cultivating maize, elephant grass and guatemala and lucerne in a cropping programme in full stands (vi) Effect of harvest stage on biomass yield and nutritive value of guatemala grass and whole sugarcane On-going (i) Adapting the hydroponic fodder technology as an alternative fodder solution for smallholder farmers for sustainable livestock production (AusAid funded project under the AAA small grants scheme) (ii) Improving dairy milk production through partial substitution of concentrates by high protein homegrown forages (IAEA-funded project) (iii) Characterisation of nutritive value of fodder and feeds for livestock and database consolidation (iv) Conservation and genetic improvement of the local goat breed.
