Growing numbers of immuno-compromised people, elderly, transplant recipients, HIV and cancer patients... being treated with immunosuppressant drugs increases the risk of foodborne illness.!

4 FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT! FDA released Proposed Rules day! Produce Rule -- standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding produce; and! Preventive Controls Rule - Requirements for food facilities, including on-farm processing.! Only deals with biological hazards! New FDA Powers the authority to order a recall of food! Does not require 3 rd party certification or FSP Does require record keeping.! Many buyers will likely require a FSP or 3 rd party certification.!

5 FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT! Qualified Exemption! Not exempt from safe food practices or state and local food safety requirements. Exemption can be lost.! Very small businesses: <$25,000 annual / 3 years! More than half sales directly to consumers (local restaurants/retailers that sell direct to consumers.)! In same state OR within 275 miles of farm! Total sales < $500,000! Packaging / placards indicate source! Bottom Line: Good Agricultural Practices will be a buyer expectation and for many a requirement.!
