1 Scientific Board News Donal Murphy-Bokern Kroge-Ehrendorf in Germany Danube Soya East West Protein Forum Berlin 7 May 2015.

2 Summary This presentation updates members of Danube Soya about the development of the Scientific Board The use of sound scientific evidence plays an important role in the management of public institutions, including for example the UK government (pictured) or the European Commission. The Scientific Board plays an analogous role in the more commercial setting of Danube Soya. There are eight members ranging from scientists with experience in plant breeding and agronomy, specialists in supporting crop development, and experts with a background in research policy and funding. Pragmatic working procedures are used while adhering to conventional public organisational governance practice. There are two formal meeting per year interspersed with numerous activities to provide on-going scientific support. This is supported with Terms of Reference (to be finalised). Meeting are minuted in the conventional way. The first face-to-face meeting was at the Annual General Meeting of Danube Soya on 23 March 2015, in Vienna. There is no formal Chairman and the Secretariat (Dr Silvia Sponza) organises the Board s business. Meeting are round table discussions, with representatives are appointed according to the specific requirements. The Board provides a range of scientific advisory and support functions as shown in slides 18 and 19. The first meeting showed a commitment to using science to support the good governance of Danube Soya generally. The wider engagement of experts ensures that Danube Soya leads in supply-chain technical developments and risk management (for example managing pests and diseases). The Board is also available to support Corporate Social Responsibility standards. The Board is committed to supporting good professional contact with the public policy community, both for agricultural policy and for research and innovation policy. It can be concluded that the Board recognises Danube Soya s public role and regard science as a contribution to good governance, as well as the foundation of improving supply chains.
