3 Keeping your tomatoes healthy We all love getting those first ripe tomatoes out of our garden, but if we don't take care of our babies, we may not get to experience that joy. One of the most common questions we get is controlling the diseases that affect tomatoes in the garden. Most diseases or fungal, and there are a number of effective pesticides which can control these issues, but you need to plan ahead, scout your garden, and know what to look for. 4 Late blight Integrated Pest Management Workshop Title- IPM Workshop Subtitle: Weed Identification for Landscapers, Farmers, and Master Gardeners Weed identification and control is on the minds of many folk that work with landscapes and crop land. This workshop will cover identification and controls for the most common weeds in this area. The workshop is from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on August 17th at the Mountain Horticulture Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River. 2 hours of pesticide credit as well as 2 hours of Landscape Contractor credits have been approved for attendees needing those CEUs. No pre-registration is required. Rosman Elementary 4-H Agriculture Club Sospiro Ranch Visit This summer, the Rosman Elementary 4-H Agriculture Club has had the opportunity to visit a dairy farm, as well as two fruit and vegetable farms in the area. These visits have allowed the students to learn about the source of their food. On August 9, 2016, the club will visit Sospiro Ranch to gain knowledge of the meat goat industry and the practice of homesteading. The Rosman Elementary 4-H Club is thankful for the hospitality of Ralph Ross and Sons Dairy, Queen's Berry Farm, McCall's Produce, and Sospiro Ranch!

Come Transylvania Cattlemen's Association Summer Picnic On July 28, 2016 the T.C.A. hosted their annual summer picnic at the picturesque Shuford farm located in the Penrose community. There were sixty attendees who enjoyed sensational food and wonderful fellowship. A short presentation concerning the importance of forage testing was given by livestock extension agents Addison Bradley (Transylvania County) and Jeff Bradley (Rutherford County). A very special thank you to Clay and Lisa Sykes for hosting the event; Clay and George Lenze for purchasing and cooking the barbecue; Mitchel Pridmore with Carolina Farm Credit who also served as a sponsor and McCall's Produce who supplied the beautiful flower arrangements.
