1 FINAL CIRCULAR National Conference on September 29-30, 2016 Organized by In Collaboration with Sponsored by Ministry of Food Processing Industry, Government of India, New Delhi

2 ICAR-Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (ICAR- CIPHET) ICAR-CIPHET was established on 29 th December 1989 at Ludhiana, Punjab (India); as a nodal institute to undertake lead researches in the area of post-harvest engineering and technology appropriate to agricultural production catchments and agro-industries. The institute's second campus was established on 19 th March 1993 at Abohar, Punjab and is primarily responsible for conducting research and development activities on fruits and vegetables. ICAR-CIPHET is also headquartering two All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs) viz. AICRP on Post-Harvest Engineering & Technology (PHET) with 30 centres and AICRP on Plasticulture Engineering and Technology (PET) with 14 centres across the country. Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (AFST) of India (I) AFST (I) was established in August This is one of the biggest Associations in the country reaching global platform through professional membership of scientists, technologists and engineers who are tomorrow's professionals. Today, its membership is around 3,000 food scientists and technologists around the globe. The 34 Chapters of the Association work in close association with the Headquarters to uphold the principles, policies and objectives as laid down in the Constitution. Ludhiana Chapter of AFST(I) was established in the year 1975 and today is one of the vibrant chapters. There are 66 life members and 38 annual members from Ludhiana chapter. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE India is the largest producer of pulses, milk and second largest producer of wheat, rice, fruits and vegetables in the world. In India, the levels of processing are very low in comparison to developed countries and the processing industry is either fragmented or operates on a small scale. The farmers mostly concentrate upon production and bestow very little attention to postharvest processing and value addition. The post-harvest losses of agricultural commodities in India are estimated to be worth more than Rs 92,000 crores. Food supplies need to be increased by 60% to meet the global food demand by Merely, the present level of agricultural production growth will not be able to feed the population without technological breakthrough. In the present context, technological challenges are becoming more complex than ever before as demand for food is increasing and supply sources are dwindling. By the way, science is also changing rapidly with the emergence of new tools, methods, techniques and approaches that promise technological breakthrough to accomplish the mission. Therefore, it is important to analyze the causes, consequences, policy strategies and technologies needed to minimize the food losses. Keeping in view the importance of post harvest sector, the present conference is planned with the following OBJECTIVES : To provide a platform for interactions and knowledge sharing amongst professionals of various food research and development organizations, food processing industries, policy makers, farmers etc. To prepare a road map for effective utilization of surplus agricultural produce in order to reduce post-harvest losses. To put forth the different innovative food processing technologies and formulate an action plan to ensure food and nutritional security. THEME AREAS: The seminar will cover the following thematic areas: Innovative and Emerging Food Processing Technologies Handling, Processing and Storage of Agricultural Commodities Health and Functional Foods Food Quality and Safety Value addition of by-products
