G E N E R A L C H A R A C T E R I S T I C S Location of the holding Legal personality of the holding Utiliseded agricultural area Farming system- Organic farming certified The simple number of holdings in a given geographical area is probably the most often used variable of the FSS. It appears in a large number of studies and reports and is the basis for the development of more detailed indicators (holdings by size, type of farming or other characteristics) "An analysis of the EU organic sector", June 2010 markets/organic_20 10_en.pdf) Policy study on the use and efficiency of public support measures addressing organic farming (ongoing) no. 4 (area under organic farming) Internal analysis in DG AGRI; briefings, graphs for presentation, answers to questions from MEPs and others Policy analysis; presentations, briefings speeches, negotiations with Third Countries, equivalency follow-up Typology of the Portuguese Farm Holdings and Taxation regimes 1/sp05go01.pdf ; Farms in eastern and Central Europe - today and tomorrow ( PW_98_1.pdf) European Union accession and land tenure data in Central and Eastern Europe (FAO; E00.htm#TOC) 1

7 VII. SUPPORT FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT This set of variables was introduced into the FSS 2010 for the first time. Since data have not been received, no data uses can be reported. DG AGRI sees the added value of these data mainly through the possibility of crossing them with other information (e.g., farm size, geographical area; type of farm; age of holder; etc.) in order to characterise beneficiaries of individual measures. However, since RD programmes are normally implemented for a period of 6 years, data collection does not have to be more frequent than that. 7
