1 Cooperative Extension Service Clark County 1400 Fortune Drive Winchester, Ky ( Fax: (859) clark.ca.uky.edu To say it has been a wet fall would be an absolute understatement. I have seen and heard reports of many crops flooding, but even those that didn t become submerged in water have still suffered losses. I have heard reports of grain crops molding in the field, and grain corn sprouting on the ear. No crop has suffered quite as much this fall as our tobacco crop. Plants that are still in the field are suffering major leaf loss due to bacterial hollow stock, a result of rainy humid weather. Tobacco that has been harvested is suffering in the barn during these conditions as well, mold and house burn is taking a toll on its curing process. Usually rain comes with a welcome from livestock producers during this time of year. Grasses are typically dry and need moisture to begin fall growth. As you know, this year we have been blessed with adequate rainfall for grass growth so much that in the past few weeks, mud from the rainfall has created a mess that looks more like early spring than early fall. As always, farmers will persevere and plan for next year s crop. In this newsletter you will find many, many upcoming events and classes, literally something for everyone! If you have any questions about any of these events, as always contact us at the Clark County Cooperative Extension Office. Sincerely, Clay Stamm County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources Remember, fall is a great time to soil sample pastures, hay fields, and crop fields. There is typically a quicker turnaround time on fall results than samples submitted during the spring rush. Fall is a great time to apply Ag lime and certain fertilizers to fields as well. The Clark County Cooperative Extension Office offers free soil testing year round. Feel free to stop in and pickup soil bags and checkout a soil probe to utilize during sampling. uarterly The Clark County Cattlemen s Association will be having a Fall Quarterly Meeting for its members on Tuesday, October 30, 6:30 pm at the Clark County Extension Office. A meal will be served and an educational presentation will be given. Admission for non-cattlemen members will be $10. Save the date and be sure to come. Please RSVP to the Clark County Extension Office at (859)

The conference is focused on turning grass into cash, said Jimmy Henning, forage extension specialist in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and conference organizer. The program features speakers who have done this across a range of enterprises including dairy, small ruminants and beef. In addition, the program will help producers better understand how to manage risk in grazingbased livestock enterprises. Hosted by UK Cooperative Extension Service and the Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council, the conference will occur at two regional locations to accommodate the state s producers. For Western Kentucky producers, the conference is October 30 at the Christian County Extension Office. Eastern Kentucky producers may attend the November 1 conference at the Clark County Extension office. At both locations, the program will run from 7:45 am until 3:30 pm local time. Among the featured speakers is Howard Straub III. Straub is the manager of the Pasture Dairy Center at Michigan State University s Kellogg Biological Station. The center has 240 acres dedicated to grazing research and a milking herd of about 130 U.S. Holstein and 25 New Zealand Friesian cows. Straub will discuss the center s research on rotational grazing of perennial pastures and ways producers can incorporate alternative and complementary forages into the grazing season. Each location will also have a local producer who will discuss how forages contribute to the profitability of their operation. In Eastern Kentucky, the speaker will be Todd Clark of Lexington. Clark is a first-generation farmer who raises a variety of products for both commodity and local food markets on 800 acres. His operation includes broilers, layers, turkeys, grass-finished beef and lamb and vegetables. Early registration for the conference is $35 per person or $50 if also renewing KFGC membership. The early registration deadline is October 22. Producers can register and view the agenda for the conference on the UK forages extension website at or contact Jimmy Henning, , jimmy.henning@uky.edu Thursday,

3 Page 3 Kentucky Department of Agriculture Seeks Applicants for Sixth Year of Research Pilot Program Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles announced October 1, 2018 that the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) has opened the application period for Kentuckians wishing to participate in the state s industrial hemp research pilot program for the 2019 growing season. Applications may be downloaded from the KDA website at kyagr.com/hemp. Grower applications must be postmarked or received by November 30, 2018, at 4:30 p.m. EST. Processor/ Handler applications are preferred by November 30, 2018, with a final deadline of June 3, The growth of our program demonstrates Congress must pass a Farm Bill that includes Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell s Hemp Farming Act of 2018, said Commissioner Quarles. With two strong hemp advocates, Leader McConnell and Congressman James Comer, serving on the Farm Bill conference committee I am confident the interest of Kentucky s industrial hemp growers will be well-represented. In 2017, the Kentucky General Assembly passed Senate Bill 218, tasking the KDA with promulgating administrative regulations for the program. Program rules can be found in administrative regulations, as the law prescribes, in 302 KAR 50:020 50:080. KDA operates its industrial hemp research pilot program under the authority of state law (KRS ) and a provision of the 2014 federal Farm Bill (7 U.S.C. 5940) that authorizes state-managed hemp pilot programs.
