DI INGEGNERIA AGRARIA Decision making tools for a sustainable reduction of livestock environmental impact Giorgio Provolo Department of Agricultural Engineering Milan - Italy LIFE+ MANEV Project UniMi University of Milano University of Milano, one of the most important universities in Italy, (65,000 students, 2,500 teaching and research staff, 2,000 non-teaching staff) Organised in Research Departments covering virtually all research and teaching fields, with a mission towards innovation while preserving tradition, and gaining national and international ti acknowledgment 2 Department of Agricultural Engineering One of the activity relates to the evaluation of nutrient loads from agricultural sources in Lombardy. The Department of Agricultural Engineering is linked to the Faculty of Agricultural Science, today the main Faculty of Agriculture in Italy Strong connections in research activities encompassing sustainable agriculture, environment protection, food processing, bioenergy and management of agro-food systems The DIA holds teaching and research commitments both on classical and most advanced topics of Agricultural Education Research Engineering, with special emphasis on : Certification & Extension service & Standards Public authorities farm and food machinery consultancies ergonomy and safety 22 faculty staff (research & teaching) teaching) rural buildings and livestock engineering 14 technicians +administration landscape planning 16 phd and post docs agricultural hydraulics and water resources planning applied physics and energetics farm information technologies sensors and automation for biosystems and bioprocesses 3 Tools for assessment of the effect of agriculture on environment, for planning and monitoring purpose. p A multicriteria evaluation system has been developed in connection with GIS. Environmental Management System of Livestock

Action in the LIFE+ MANEV Project Reception pit (each load is weighted) ASSESSMENT OF A COLLECTIVE TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT SCHEME FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION AND NITROGEN REMOVAL IN LOMBARDY (ITALY) biogas manure separator Co-generator Reception pit 10 farms 300 m 3 per day 70% reduction Liquid fraction Solid fraction To and land spreading Solid manure loading Anaerobic digestion and co-generation unit 780 kwe AGRARIA DI INGEGNERIA A D Solid-liquid separation SBR reactors
Storages Treated manure delivered to farmers The slurry tanker is weighted before leaving the farm Is this a good solution? How to face the problems of an area with high nitrogen load? Better to have few large treatments plants. Centralised treatment plant Farm treatment plant No treatment
... or several plants of different sizes? Centralised treatment plant Farm treatment plant SBR treatment plant Solid separation and transport Cooperative treatment plant No treatment Integrated Assessment of manure management options Evaluation should be based on: (1)technical aspects, (2)environmental aspects and (3)economic aspects It is practically impossible to evaluate different nutrient management options without the support of decision making tools Evaluation criteria Alternatives: example Objective: organic nitrogen reduction Environment Energy Acidification Eutrophication Global warming (GHG) Other Energy consumption Electricity production Heat production Raw slurry Screw flotation Biological press nitrogen removal Screw press flotation Biological nitrogen removal Liquid Liquidid Economy Legislation Social Human and Animal health Investment cost Operative costs Subsidies Community regulation National and local regulation Farmers acceptance Social awareness Pathogens Odours DI INGEGNERIA AGRARIA solids sludge Dewatering sludge Sludge dewatering Agricultural use Solid Liquid Agricultural uses indicators Radar chart example DI INGEGNERIA AGRARIA Each scenario can be compared to others by means of indicators like: Ammonia emissions CO 2 emissions Energy requirement Regulatory compliance Manpower requirement Odour abatment Nitrogen abatment Costs.. A multicriteria approach should be used to assess alternatives Human and animal Health Social Legislation Acidification Economics A B C eutrophication energy Global warming
The LIFE+ MANEV software tool will: gather the knowledge and results obtained during the project face problems from a practical and real point of view, according to the site specific requirements evaluate the environment effects of different manure management systems Consider stakeholders different point of view Demonstrate the possible management options in different location in Europe
