2 Sustainable development benefitting people and planet Reismühle Brunnen, Coop, Helvetas and their partners support smallholders in India and Thailand to convert their rice-based production systems to sustainable organic farming since Farmers can improve and diversify their incomes while managing natural resources in a more sustainable way. They receive fair prices for their products and are enabled to invest in their future development. The project also strengthens local capacities, quality management and infrastructure. Seite 2

They can no longer earn a sufficient livelihood with their income from farming Dependency on external financing and seed producers is increasing, and is driving up debt People are migrating to the cities in the hope of a better income, particularly young people There are fewer and fewer young farmers to safeguard the future of the agricultural business Families can no longer rely on support from other family members Costs for hired workers, particularly at harvest time, are rising The interest in luxury goods and a mobile lifestyle is constantly on the rise Landscapes and areas are in an appalling state (deforestation, monocultures, lack of water, etc.) Environmental conditions (flooding, landslides, change in monsoon seasons and their intensity) Extreme overfertilization from the time of the "green revolution" is causing contamination problems Chemicals are used wrongly Costs are increasing substantially in order to maintain productivity Limited crop rotation.
